Letter from the Dean

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As fall quarter closes and the holidays are on the horizon, I always reflect on the talents of our new students, growth of upperclassman and the caliber of the many performances that are created by the faculty and students.

Along with the talents of our faculty and staff, I am continually discovering the incredible talents of our alumni, many that are leaders in their field. In October, I had the great honor of attending the Lucie Awards ceremony and celebrating the achievements of photographer Herman Leonard. He is a defining example of the true promise of Ohio University. Please see the feature below to learn more about Mr. Leonard's lifetime achievement.

I hope that you will make it one of your resolutions to continue to be, or to become, an active alumnus in 2009 and support the college and university.

I wish you a terrific holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
Charles McWeeny
Dean of the College of Fine Arts

The Panoramic Photography of Thomas R. Schiff

Cincinnati photographer and Ohio University alumnus Thomas Schiff, '70, has donated more than 50 of his most recent panoramic photos to the Kennedy Museum of Art's permanent collection.

These works showcase some of the country's most recognized architectural sites and structures, including New York's Times Square, Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings and the Las Vegas strip. The photos make up Schiff's current exhibit at the Kennedy, "Interiors, Exteriors and All Around,'' and will be on display through Jan. 18.

"I always like to go to places people are familiar with and show the perspective from a panoramic camera," Schiff said. "The camera distorts everything in the picture -- straight lines become curved and it throws off your perspective. It challenges your relationship to what is familiar or thought to be understood."

A Lucie for Leonard

Photographer Herman Leonard was at the right place at the right time: a Manhattan jazz club in 1949.

His photographs, such as those taken in Birdland, a jazz club located between 8th and 9th Avenues in Manhattan, captured the essence of musicians such as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughan. These works have earned him international recognition and, recently, a prestigious Lucie Award, which have been described as the Oscars of photography.

Leonard, who graduated from Ohio University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, received the achievement in portraiture award, which was given to him at the Lincoln Center in New York City on October 20, 2008 by his longtime friend Tony Bennett.
