Letter from the Dean

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy New Year! I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season. The students and faculty are back on campus and hard at work creating a new season of concerts, exhibitions and performances. The winter calendar of events is packed with what are sure to be exceptional performances and work from our talented students.

The students also are hard at work on their own individual creative research. Check out the feature story on Derrick Jones, a graduate student in the School of Film. Derrick has been busy and VERY successful in his artistic endeavors as you can see!

It’s also exciting to report our students' success in the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Fund awards. College of Fine Arts students accounted for nearly 25% of the awards in the university this year. This is a great collective accomplishment and an indication of the quality of artistic work by the students in the college.

Next week, you can help support our students simply by purchasing a book. Barnes & Noble is partnering with the college for a bookfair on Tuesday, January 20. A portion of each purchase will go towards the Kari Rosenberg Memorial Scholarship in the School of Art. Kari was an incredibly talented young alumna who graduated from Graphic Design in the School of Art. The promotion is valid for in-store purchases only anywhere in the United States. Your support can help make a difference. Scholarships are vital to our students. Learn more about Kari and download the necessary code here.

Thank you for keeping in touch. Please let me know how I can help you stay connected to Ohio University and the College of Fine Arts.

Sincerely,
Charles McWeeny
Dean of the College of Fine Arts

Monthly Feature

To most people, family history is a subject reserved solely for shoddy amateur videos. For graduate film student Derrick Jones, however, documenting his sister’s theater career and the history of his childhood home was more than that: it was a way to not only tell about the things he cared for, but also a way to make a name for himself in the film world at large.

His personal documentaries and talents have earned him a Princess Grace Foundation award, one of the highly competitive internships in the American Pavilion at the 2009 Cannes International Film Festival and an acceptance of his film “631" to premier at the 2009 San Diego Black Film Festival.

Jones also received the 2008 I. Hollis Parry/Ann Parry Billman Fine Arts Award, which is funded by alumni of the College of Fine Arts. This was an honor that Jones said was an honor that really hit home on the importance of giving back and being a part of a university community.

“The special thing about the award is that they don’t have to do it,” Jones said. “There’s no obligation -- they just do it because they want to help others succeed. My goal isn’t to be rich, but if I were I would definitely give back to the school and my community.”
