Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery - Columbus Ohio

On June 8, 2004 the Grave Hoppers explored Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery. Where a large Prison Camp once stood, this small cemetery is all that remains. During the Civil War, this Sullivant Avenue location was far from the Columbus city limits, and as men died in prison from smallpox and various other causes, they were interred here. I fully intend on tracking down several books recommended to me about Camp Chase to perhaps understand the reality of the place.

Like most places the Grave Hoppers explore, Camp Chase is reputedly haunted by the Lady in Grey. Benjamin F. Allen, grave 233 in the Camp, is the corpse plagued by this lady. Supposedly she is seen often, sobbing, and leaves flowers on the grave of her belovéd. Due to the guy on the lawnmower and my bad memory, we didn't attempt to contact the Lady nor Mr. Allen. Perhaps a future trip will result in something better than some pretty spiffy pictures.

Below are the photos collected from our trip. Camp Chase is located at 2900 Sullivant Avenue, just west of Hague Avenue next to the Dari Twist. To get inside, you have to park either across the stree near the apartments or in the Dari Twist lot and walk to the gate of the cemetery. The Dari Twist doesn't like people parking there for too long, though. Simply select a title below to view the pictures; descriptions are below the images.
