Ohio University (OU) is recognized throughout
the world for its programs catering to students with international
interests. The first international program was a Japanese student
who attended OU in 1895. Since then a growing number of students
come from all over the world representing 100 countries. The
current international enrollment figure is about 1,150 students.
New students at OU will discover that there are
many opportunities for them to become involved and learn more about
U.S. and world cultures on the campus. The Office of International
Student and Faculty Services in conjunction with students organizations
and particular classes conducts cultural workshops for students and
staff in residence halls on how members of one culture can relate
successfully to people form another. Nearly a third of the international
students on campus in the fall will be new to OU -- just like freshmen
from the U.S. They will be eager to make friends, share their
culture with others and learn about U.S. culture from their American
colloeagues.
The world is getting smaller
and we are truly becoming a world of global students. The international
educational experience is a valuable one for enhancing one's life
experiences, growth and future.
OU is a partner in more than 100 international
agreements with overseas entities and universities and many of which
provide study abroad programs. Six different majors are offered
in International Studies, and OU offers degrees to students living
in Southeast Asia through programs at sister universities in Malaysia,
Hong Kong and Japan. Last year 542 OU students from the U.S.
studied abroad. Students are encouraged to consider studying
abroad during their time at OU, and some even join the Peace Corps
after they graduate.
The International Student Union, a major campus
programming organization, welcomes the involvement of U.S. students.
Formed for the purpose of programming "cultural understanding:,
the ISU represents over 22 international student organizations. Throughout
the year, ISU sponsors programs such as the International Dinner,
the International Expo, movies, lectures and discussions, and leadership
training.
Each year, these kinds of activities culminate
during the International Street Fair held in late May each year when
Court Street is taken over by signing and dancing performances, and
by booths sponsored by student and community organizations selling
food and other items. Everyone from OU and the community is
invited to join in the festivies.
