Introduction to the Class

Email and Memo Assignment

Due: Monday, April 7

 

The first assignment is to write an introduction in memo format.  The tone and style of the document should be semi-formal, in prose (i.e. not a bulleted list), and thoroughly introduce you to the instructor.  Include all vital information about yourself, and be sure to include the following:

 

·          Name and preferred nickname (if applicable)

·          Hometown

·          Year at OU

·          Field and major

·          Scholastic and outside interests

·          Reason for taking this class

·          Previous experience with technical writing or communication (if any)

·          Computer experience

·    Access to computers/ Internet

·    Familiarity with Macs/ PCs

·    Familiarity with programs like Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Viewer, Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe PageMill, alternative web page design program or HTML

·    Any additional software or hardware that may be applicable

·          Additional appropriate information

 

This is a semi-formal introduction and the content should reflect both the audience and purpose.  Additionally, the format should reflect standard memo layout as we discussed in class. 

 

The second part of the assignment is to submit the introduction via email to the class listserv.  This is an email that introduces you to the rest of the class, and vice versa.  Please keep in mind that for the email your audience is primarily your peers.  The adjustment in audience will require an adjustment in tone, content, and even style.  However, this should still be a professionally constructed communication.  Although you are addressing peers, you still need to keep in mind the principles of successful communication.  Send the email to eng305j-a19-spr03-list@ohio.edu
