Sample Letter to Legislators
Dear Senator [Representative] ______,
As one of your constituents, I’m writing to ask that you support
the Tennessee Scenic Vistas Protection Act, Senate Bill SB 3822 [or House
Bill HB 3348].
This bill would halt mountain top removal coal mining (which is sometimes
called cross-ridge mining) in the state of Tennessee until a federal environmental
impact study can be completed.
I was deeply troubled to discover that coal companies can legally blow
up Tennessee’s mountains, destroying them and the headwaters they
contain. This is an indefensible waste of the state’s natural resources.
It’s bad for water quality, it produces few jobs, it devastates
mountain communities, and it ruins opportunities for responsible development
and future tourism.
My faith calls me to be a good steward of God’s Creation and also
to care for the well-being of my neighbors.
I sincerely hope you will support this legislation. I look forward to
hearing from you on this matter.
