BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

This course is a continuation of the two year music theory sequence begun in the
freshman year. Emphasis will be placed this quarter on rondo form, short piano
forms, and harmonic and melodic developments of the nineteenth century.


PREREQUISITE:
MUS 201 or equivalent.

Ralph Turek, The Elements of Music, Vol. II, 2nd Ed., (NY: McGraw-Hill, 1996).
-the accompanying workbook to the above.
Charles Burkhart,Anthology for Musical Analysis, 5th Ed. (NY: Harcourt Brace
College Publishers 1994).
a music notebook.


COURSE COMPETENCIES:

By the end of the quarter the student will be expected to be able to:

-identify and analyze movements from the Classical and Romantic periods embodying
compound ternary, sonata, rondo, and sonata-rondo forms.

-write a formal paper analyzing an example of sonata or sonata-rondo form from the
Classical or early Romantic periods.

-analyze and demonstrate 19th century chromatic practices such as double
augmented fourth chord, enharmonic German sixth and diminished seventh chords,
expanded tonicization, and harmonic sequence.

-analyze linear harmonies such as altered dominants, embellishing diminished
seventh chord, extended dominant functions, and some early examples of non-
functional harmonies.

-discuss and analyze examples of late 19 th century.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:


Enrollment in a class carries with it a commitment to attend that class. More than
three unexcused absence will result in lowering the final letter grade. LATE
ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Likewise, students who are not present
for exams or quizzes will receive a "0" for that exam unless arrangements are made
in advance.


GRADING:


Your final grade will be based upon homework, two mid term exams, an analytical
paper, and a final exam. These will be weighted as follows:


Assignments & Quizzes: 10%
Mid Term Exam I: 20%
Mid Term II: 20%
Analysis Paper(Mid Term Exam III): 20%
Final Exam: 30%
TOTAL: 100%

PLAGIARISM:


Anyone caught duplicating another's work on an exam or assignment will
automatically fail the course.

Weeks 2 & 3: Chapter 8: Sonata Form.
Week 4: Chapter 9: The Rondo.

MID TERM I & Approval of a Sonata or Sonata Rondo For the

Weeks 5 & 6: Chapter 10: Enharmonic Use of Chords.
Weeks 7: Chapter 11: Expanded Tonicization and Harmonic Sequence.

Rough Draft of Analysis and Outline Due

Weeks 8 & 9: Chapter 12: Linear Harmonies & Review.

MID TERM II & Rough Draft of Paper Due


Week 10: Chapter 13: The Solo Song.

MID TERM III - PAPER DUE
