Prerequisite:

The prerequisite for this course is MUS 104 with a grade of C or better or the
equivalent.

Brief Description of Course:

Music 105, Dictation and Sight Singing, is the second in a series of three courses
designed to acquaint the freshman music major with the aural perception of
underlying grammar and syntax of musical structure. Particular emphasis this
quarter will be placed on the principles of tonal melodic structures, harmonic
progression, and voice leading.

-Blombach, Ann K. MacGamut 2000
-a music notebook, either 5" X 7" or 8 1/2" X 11".
Note: these texts will be used throughout the year.

Expected Competencies:

By the end of the quarter, the student will be expected to be able to:

-know thoroughly the rudiments of notational and aural skills first covered in MUS
104;
-know the organizing principles of the melodic phrase and its division into smaller
structural units;
-identify aurally all intervals, triad qualities and their inversions, and tonal diatonic
melodic lines of a phrase or more in length;
-identify aurally short harmonic progressions involving principal triads and the V7;
-identify aurally brief 2-voice diatonic examples;
-sing at sight melodic examples involving:1. greater rhythmic difficulties than
previously studied and 2. occasional embellishing chromaticism.

Grading:

The grades for each skill will be weighted as follows:

Sight Singing Mid Term: 15% Dictation Mid Term: 15%
Sight Singing Final Exam: 20% Dictation Final: 20%

Attendance Policy:

Class attendance: you have a maximum of three unexcused absences. Each absence
in addition to the maximum will lower your final grade by a portion of a letter (A to
A-, B to B-, etc.).

Plagiarism:


Anyone caught duplicating another's work on an exam or assignment will
automatically fail the course.

Special Note: You will need at least a C in MUS 105 to progress to MUS 106.
