GERMAN
Modern Languages – Ohio University
What is
German 511/512/513?
The German
section of the Ohio University Department
of Modern Languages does not offer a graduate level German program. Graduate students in other departments on
campus, however, often wish to enroll in German courses, either to
develop
their language skills or to prepare for reading examinations. To meet their needs, the department allows
graduate students to enroll in regular undergraduate German classes and
receive
graduate credit (511, 512, or 513).
There is no actual class for German 511, 512, or 513. Instead,
students
attend the German course that corresponds to their language ability
(for
example, German 111 for beginners), but are enrolled officially in
German
511.
Who can register for GER 511, 512, 513?
All graduate
students at Ohio University.
How
does one register for GER 511, 512, 513?
Students
first choose the level that is appropriate
to their skills and needs. It is
recommended that students complete the placement exam (available in the
Language
Resource Center in the basement of Gordy Hall) to ensure proper
placement.
Next, students contact the instructor of the class in which they wish
to enroll
and request that they be given a spot in the class. This should be done
before
the first day of class. Based on the space
availability and demand for the class, the instructor will determine
whether
the graduate student will be able to take the class.
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE GRADUATE
STUDENT WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE CLASS.
What
are the expectations of students enrolled in 511, 512, 513?
The
expectations of graduate students are identical
to those of undergraduates in the course. Graduate Students are
expected to
attend all sessions and complete the same assignments and examinations
as
undergraduates. If the graduate student
earns a grade
of „B“ or above, s/he will receive the grade „CR“. If the
graduatestudent earns
a grade of „B-“ or lower, s/he will receive the actual letter grade.
Can
one retake 511, 512 or 513?
Yes. Graduate
students can only register for graduate
level courses. Regardless of the number of German courses a graduate
student
has enrolled, s/he must register for GER 511 (fall quarter), 512
(winter), or
513 (spring) for any German course taken that quarter.
