WORK LOAD:  Expect to spend two hours of study time for each class hour.  Gaining proficiency in German requires dedication and effor on a daily basis.  Keep up with the work and practice every day!

ATTENDANCE:  There is a strict attendance policy in this course that will help you acquire the self discipline necessary for success in language learning.  There are no unexcused absences.  your attendance grade will equal the percentage of days attended (see Class Participation Scale).  Exceptions will only be granted for medical or family emergencies, observance of religious holidays, approved trips required for other Ohio University courses.  In all cases, written documentation will be required.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:  The class will be conducted in German and all students are expected to be prepared and participate regularly.  Your active participation and preparation are essential to your learning and will contribute significantly to your performance. They are an expected part of the course. Participation will be assessed using the Class Participation Scale.  Remember, class participation is not about grammatical perfection!  It is about making an effort to try out your German skills and improve them.  Everyone will make mistakes, so try to learn from, rather than fear them, and have FUN!

ESSAYS:  In order to improve and assess your writing skills there will be 3 essays (IN GERMAN).  For each essay you will turn in two drafts.  I will grade and correct the first draft using correction symbols (see Korrekturschlüssel).  Your second draft will be a corrected rewrite of the first.  Your final score will be the average of both drafts (the first counts 60 % and the second 40%).  Your essays will be graded according to the Grading Scale for Writing Assignments .  The second draft is due three days after the first draft is returned in class.  Late work will be accepted only under specific circumstances.  The essay topics, lengths, and due dates will be assigned in class.  All essays must be typed in a 12 point font, double-spaced, and contain a word count.  Essays that do not conform to these specifications will not be accepted.
For the third essay you will choose any topic related to the German speaking world that you find interesting (subject to my approval).  Your task will be to write a short, informative essay for an enclyclopedic type text for students interested in the German speaking world.  For the essay you will need to conduct a little outside research.  During the fifth week of the quarter you will turn in a short annotated bibliography (at least 3 entries) and a short description of your topic and why you chose it.  The essay will be due during the ninth week of the quarter.

QUIZZES: There will be a number of short written or oral quizzes, announced and unannounced.  They will help you to master vocabulary and grammatical structures and prepare for the tests, and will also help me to assess your preparation and understanding of the class materials as well as my own performance in fulfilling the goals of this course.

TESTS: There will be three tests during the quarter.  They will assess your progress in the following skills and areas: grammar, writing, vocabulary, listening, reading, and questions/assignments about the reading/video texts from class.  Together we will review the material before each Test.  (Only in the case of verifiable (documented) illness or emergency will a make-up be given for a test or quiz).

FINAL EXAM: The final exam will be a cumulative test covering all of the themes and grammar topics discussed in the class.  The prime focus, however, will be on the materials covered after the third test.  (There is no make up for the final exam, unless there are special circumstances, which you must explain well in advance).

ROLEPLAYS:  You will write and perform 2 roleplays (in GERMAN) during the quarter.  The first will be an informal dialogue that you will prepare and perform in class.  The second roleplay will be a more formal "skit": you and your partner(s) will (outside of class) write, correct, memorize, rehearse, and perform (in class) a 5-minute dialogue in German.  I will provide the role-play guidelines and topics in class.

ORAL EXAM: You will sign up for a 5 minute interview with me outside of class (towards the end of the term).  During the interview we will discuss your third essay (why you chose the topic, what interests you, what else you would like to know) as well as the course readings.  I will provide interview topics so that you can prepare outside of class.  You will be graded according to the Grading Scale for Interviews and Role-plays.

HÖRVERSTÄNDNIS: Regular listening exercises in the Language Resources Center (LRC) are required in this course.  If you are not familiar with the LRC in the basement of Gordy Hall please ask a lab attendant to show you around.  There is a series of tapes to accompany the workbook (Arbeitsbuch zum Hanbuch der deutschen Grammatik.)  You can check out the tapes in the LRC.  I will give you deadlines and details about the assignments in class.

HOMEWORK:  You are expected to complete assignments IN WRITING unless otherwised specified.  Regular attention to homework will have a very positive impact on your performance in other areas of the class.  Assignments must be ready by class time on the date due.  Please turn in your homework to me after each class.  Late homework will only be accepted under certain circumstances. (see policy above)

VOCABULARY PRACTICE:  Beginning in 211, you are expected to know and actively use the vocabulary from GER 111-113.  Review and study the basic vocabulary from the first year on your own!  Study and review the vocabulary lists for each of the texts we read.  These lists will be tested in our quizzes and exams.  You are responsible for knowing these words, so make vocabulary and verb form review part of your daily Geman practice.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:  Becoming proficient in German means developing language SKILLS in addition to understanding how the language works. Language skills are developed through continuous and meaningful PRACTICE, including practice in using the language to communicate with others. In class we will use a variety of practice activities and language tasks that require you to interact with others. These are designed to supplement the INDIVIDUAL STUDY and preparation that you can do best by yourself at home.  Optimally, you should also find a study partner to practice vocabulary and dialogues outside class.
You will find that REGULAR rather than sporadic PREPARATION is essential for steady progress and good performance. Timely completion of homework helps to reinforce your learning and keep you up to date in class. REGULAR ATTENDANCE will give you the opportunity to practice using the language with others and to receive feedback; it is also a courtesy to your fellow learners when you all attend regularly, fully prepared and motivated to work and learn.
Please don't hesitate to visit me during office hours to discuss questions or problems regarding the course. I can help you with strategies to help you increase your learning. If you cannot come to office hours, please contact me to arrange a time that you can meet.

Last but not least:  A fabulous opportunity for additional speaking and listening practice is the department's GERMAN STAMMTISCH, which meets Tuesdays from 7-9pm at Casa Cantina, the bar of the Casa Nueva Restaurant on 4 W. State Street.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: The Ohio University Student Code of Conduct prohibits all forms of academic dishonesty.  In compliance with university policy, no form of cheating will be tolerated in this course. At the instructor's discretion, students who are believed to be violating this policy will be questioned immediately.  Possible consequences include a grade of zero on the assignment, course failure, and/or referral to judiciaries.  This code applies to all aspects of this course, including composition writing.  Editing/writing help from native speakers is considered academic dishonesty.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: For all graduate students enrolled in this course, a grade of CR will be given if the final grade is a B or above. If the grade is B- or below, the letter grade will be given and will appear on the student's transcript.

Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Spaß und Erfolg in unserem Kurs.  Vergessen Sie nicht, Sie können jederzeit mit Fragen, Kursproblemen, und Anregungen zu mir kommen.  Ich hoffe, dass Sie viel lernen und dass Sie viel Spaß im Kurs haben.
