M |
y name is Jida Mohamed. I am a Malaysian student at
Ohio
University majoring in Public Relations at E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. My minors
are History and the Malay Language.
I have been
in the United States for almost 2 and half years. So far I have enjoyed my time
here at O.U. I am an active member of the International
Student Union and once served as the Programming Executive and
Editor of Accents, the quarterly international student newsletter.
During my free time, I love to surf the Internet (in journalism, we call it sharpening our information gathering skills), spending time with my friends, hanging out with my cool cat, Blu or watch movies. I like to be involved in as many cultural activities as well. I have been a part of the Malaysian traditional dance troupe here at Ohio University and we have done over 10 performances in the last two years.
Whenever I have the means and purpose, I love to travel. So far I have been to five wonderful countries. Let’s see now, three hundred and nine more to go (rough figure)… J
I have been to Medan in Indonesia; Wales and London
in England; Osaka and Kyoto in Japan; Ohio, L.A., New York, Washington DC,
Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Florida and Georgia in America; Singapore; Taiwan
and Hong Kong.
Each trip was wonderful and exciting but one
that remains as the most memorable one would be the trip to Itami City,
Hyogo-Prefecture in Japan. I went to school as well as home-stayed with a
Japanese family for two weeks. I learnt a lot of the schooling system there but
above all, I believe I witnessed how traditional culture and modern technology
co-existed in one small piece of island.
Kinkakuji Temple in Kyoto
During my time in Japan, I went to various places, got to experience all kinds of new food, a different culture, new forms of transportation, new language…everything was just so strange. But curiosity prevailed. Now I have cravings for sushi and soba, great passion for Japanese culture and I am ferociously defensive about wasabe and raw fish.
I should mention here that I am not alone here at Ohio University. I have plenty of friends as well as relatives who are also studying or already graduated from Ohio University. They are my sister Aziana E. Mohamed and my cousin Noreen N. Hisham. Both aspire to be business people, but who knows where their interest may place them.

Aside from Aziana, I have two other siblings, Lily and Hakim.
Lily is a medical doctor in England and is married with two beautiful children,
Daniel and Julian. Hakim is a hyper-energetic, multi-interest teenager who
loves to play every game there is under the sun. He’s currently studying at
Athens High School, and one day he hopes to serve with the army.
