Return to Norfolk

Our return to Norfolk was looked upon by all hands with great expectations. We had had a long voyage from New Zealand and we were, of course, eager to be "home." I was sure that I was going to get a lot of mail when we arrived there as it had been many weeks since we had received mail.

The first thing we saw as we approached the harbor was a tug coming out to greet us and welcome us back. No arch of hoses spraying water, however.

Our welcome was not quite what we had expected. There was a band, and some friends and relatives, but it was, to say the least, low key.

Our Antarctic adventure was over and we were to go into drydock to have extensive repairs made so the Nespelen could make another trip to the Antarctic. I was not to go, however, as I was promoted to Fire Control Technician 2nd Class, and since the Nespelen did not rate someone of such a lofty rank, I was transferred to the USS Truckee, but that's another story.

The End
