Attendance: Attendance is not required. However, exams will cover both reading and lecture material. Quizzes will be administered in class.

Grading: Grading will based on a 4 quizzes, 1 paper, and a comprehensive final exam.

Quizzes: The quizzes will consist of 30 points worth of matching, definitions, listing, or true false questions. The top 4 of 5 quiz scores will be used for your grade. Make-ups will be given for university pre-approved absences only. Students more than 10 minutes late will not be allowed to take the quiz.

Papers: The paper should be a review, essay, research proposal, case study, or other project. A wide variety of topics are allowable and creativity is encouraged. Example topics might include: Biological Causes of Anxiety, Freudian Views of Depression, Prozac and Suicide: Are They related?, Viagra’s Effectiveness for Impotence, Attention-Deficit Disorder in Adults: Reality or Myth?, Rethinking Sybil, Borderline Personality Disorder as Evidenced in "Fatal Attraction", etc.

Papers should be on the average 6 pages long (max 8 – not including title or reference pages) and will be graded according to the following criteria: writing style, grammar, accuracy of content, adequate depth and breadth of coverage, and creativity. The papers should be in typed in APA format with all references appropriately cited. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

** Note: Papers turned in late will automatically drop one letter grade (10 points).

Final Exam: The final exam will consist of 75 multiple choice questions (3 points each) from any assigned chapter (1-9, 11-13,18). Make-ups will be given for university pre-approved absences only.

Extra Credit: Extra credit can be obtained in one of three ways (Maximum 40 extra credit points/person):

  1. Turn in a current newspaper or popular magazine article related to abnormal psychology along with a 1-page, typed summary of your reaction to the article (10 points per article).
  2. Participate in psychology research 5 points for each experimental credit (1 hour).
  3. Volunteer work in the community at a social service agency (e.g., Crisis line, My Sister’s Place, The Gathering Place, Southeastern Psychiatric Hospital). Anyone who brings a signed form from the agency indicating a minimum of 1 hour per week.
