Ten links to newspapers that aren't given their due
In journalism grad school, all you hear is New York Times, Washington Post, blah blah blah. If The New York Times is so great, why is it sold at the Kroger in Athens, Ohio? If you want a real picture of America, you've got to check out papers from throughout the nation, such as:
- The Detroit Free Press has great auto-industry coverage. The reader forums provide a broader perspective of the area's more prominent issues (read: the Lions and the Red Wings).
- The Boston Globe covers the East Coast in exquisite detail. If you have time for only a quick glance, you can get a summary of the day's top news items.
- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the South's outstanding paper. If you didn't get enough of the Summer Olympics, you can still find in-depth coverage here. As a bonus, there's links to college football games on Real Audio.
- The Rocky Mountain News can keep you in touch with the latest developments in the Oklahoma City bombing case.
- The San Jose Mercury News devotes a lot of coverage to Silicon Valley and the computer biz. If graphic design means anything to you, check out this site.
- The Sacramento Bee covers California politics better than the LA Times. Good election coverage, too.
- The Seattle Times covers the Pacific Northwest like no other paper. You probably aren't going to see any late news from the left coast in any other media outlet, if you live out east.
- The Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette, combined, have wide-ranging coverage of the booming Southwest. There's lots of info for prospective tourists, too.
- The Baltimore Sun is another good East Coast paper, but its site has a bit more in the way of infotainment. It contains tons of information on Maryland, too.
- The Miami Herald is Florida, from natural disasters to Dave Barry to the Dolphins.

If you really want to see The New York Times, this is your big chance.
