CERTIFICATE IN ITALIAN STUDIES

DESCRIPTION

The Department of Modern Languages offers a Certificate in Italian Studies, designed as an interdisciplinary and complementary course of study for any undergraduate degree. The aim of the Certificate in Italian Studies is to provide an introduction to the very rich and varied culture of Italy, and to explore it using a variety of disciplines and subjects. These subjects include literature, history, archeology, art, cinema and political thought. Knowledge of the Italian language, both written and spoken, is an important tool for an understanding of Italian culture and is therefore a core element in the Certificate in Italian Studies. The certificate requires 24 credits, which students can take from the following departments: Modern Languages, History, Classics, and Art History.

CURRICULUM 

(24 credits)

Required core classes:
 

  • ITAL 341 Advanced Italian Conversation and Composition (4 units)

    • (Prerequisite: beginning and intermediate Italian or the equivalent)
     
  • ITAL 342 Advanced Italian Conversation and Composition (4 units)

    • (Prerequisite: beginning and intermediate Italian or the equivalent)
    (ITAL 341 and 342 focus on modern Italian culture and civilization in addition to language study)
     
  • ILML 335 Topics in Italian literature/film (in translation) (4 units)

    • (ILML 335 may focus on any of the following areas of Italian literature and film: modern, medieval, renaissance and 20th century)
