To Whom It May Concern,
Now that I am a junior in college and becoming closer to graduation,
I often reflect on the past three years and the great success that I have
endured. These last three years have helped develop the person that
I wanted to become. For this reason, my college years have become
to be the best and most important years of my life. The purpose of
the following letter is keeping you aware of the progress that I have made
and what I have planned for the future. But, first, I would
like to extend my gratitude, to your foundation, United Mine Workers Association,
because without the scholarships and grants that you have provided for
me, continuing my education would not have been possible. It has
always been a dream of mine to become a doctor, and your foundation is
making that dream become possible. My college years have been great
learning experience for me, not only am I pursuing a professional career
but also am learning social aspects that are necessary to work as a professional.
As an incoming freshman, I was a Pre-Dentistry major but quickly
decided to switch my major. Spring quarter of my freshman year I
had a professor, Dr. Kevin Manning, who guided me to my present major,
Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences. Dr. Manning has been a great
inspiration and tremendous help to me during the past two years.
He has helped me with important decisions concerning my future as well
as help in classes. The time I have been a Hearing, Speech, Language,
and Science major I have had great academic success and am anxiously looking
towards my future as an Audiologist. Next year I will be a senior,
which means graduate school is insight and applications will become due.
Because I have chosen a career in Audiology it is mandatory that I complete
an additional four years of schooling, in which I hope to pursue here at
Ohio University. In the last five years, Ohio University has created
a remarkable program that will benefit me when I begin to search for a
job. The faculty here at Ohio University has inspired me to choose
this career and I hope to follow in their footsteps in my future.
In addition to the scholarship provided by United Mine Workers
Association, I work two jobs during summers and the Winter Intercession.
This summer I will be working as a waitress at a Country Club as well as
managing a small business in my hometown. These summer jobs have
taught me different ways of dealing with the public. These jobs help to
provide the money that is needed for my education. I dedicate my
entire summer to work during my breaks so it isn’t necessary for me to
work during the school year. I feel that a job would take away valuable
time that is needed to focus on school related activities. While
in school my main focuses include my future plans and obtaining the grades
that will make this happen.
As I have said before, after my schooling is complete I plan
to pursue a career as an audiologist working with the elderly. The
persistence and hard work that I have applied to academics will be rewarded
when I have steady job within a nursing home, hospital or a private practice,
all of which work with the elderly. The job market within audiology
is steadily rising because the elderly population is continuing to grow
each year due to the “baby-boomer” generation. As the elderly population
grows more people are will be diagnosed with presbycusis, a hearing loss
due to aging. Another great benefit as a professional in audiology
deals with the location of jobs. Jobs within this profession are
obtainable in all areas, including small towns to large cities and are
usually located within all medical facilities.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you again for you generosity
that your foundation has showed me and ask for a renewal of the scholarship.
I am very close to receiving my Bachelors in Science and continuing to
graduate school and your grant would help me to continue. I have
enclosed a copy of my current transcript, a list of my accomplishments
and a personal letter that tells in detail the need that I have for this
scholar ship. I will anxiously be looking forward to hearing from
you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lori A. Kress
