If you have not yet purchased the package of materials for this class, there are copies of the textbook and workbook on reserve in Alden Library.  You should check them out, photocopy pages for the first week of class, and purchase your own copies ASAP.  Everyone must do the homework before class and bring pages 242-248 of the text to class on the second day. 

TEXTO: 

a.  If you did not do so in class, read/study pp. 242-45. 
b.  Read pp. 246-47 before completing 3-2 on p. 247 and 3-3 on p. 248.
c.  Read through the grammar explanation on pp. 248-49 and study the examples.
MANUAL:
a.  Familiarize yourself with the Manual guidelines on the course homepage.
b.  After completing the textbook reading and exercises, complete 3-1, 3-3, 3-4, 3-5 on pp. 66-69 of PART II of the Manual.  For 3-3, refer to the short paragraph on Mayan style on p. 246 of the textbook and practice only the vocabulary you learn there.  We will work with more of the rest of this vocabulary later in the unit.

a.  Study the grammar explanation on pp. 248-49 and memorize the verb forms for future tense.  Note the yellow box in the margin that refers you to the verb tables for irregular future forms.  You are responsible for these forms, which are outlined on p. 385.
MANUAL:
a.  Complete exercises 3-6 through 3-10 on pp. 70-72.  Check and correct answers in a different color ink.
b.  Complete "Redacción" pp. 72-73 by referring to the reading on p. 246 of your text and to the reading on this website.  Those readings give you information regarding physical features considered signs of beauty in Mayan culture.  You should base your article on a comparison of those features to whatever features your culture considers signs of beauty.  This short writing assignment will help you draft your composition for Unidad 3.
c.  Complete 3-12, "A escuchar," on p. 73.  The audio for 3-12 is found on the Part 2 CD, track 8.  If your Activities Manual did not come packaged with a CD, you can check out a tape in the Language Resource Center (Gordy 015) containing the audio tracks for all listening comprehension exercises.

a.  Read/Study the paragraphs that accompany the photos on pp. 282-83.  Use your dictionary to find the meaning of any unfamiliar vocabulary.  For the paragraph on p. 282, which precious metal does each metaphor describe?  In answer to the question at the end of the paragraph, make a list of at least 3 aspects that the Andean countries might have in common.  For the paragraph on p. 283, identify at least 3 effects the geography of the region may have had on these countries.
b.  Study p. 284 and prepare to ask your instructor questions about any terminology or concepts you don't understand.
c.  Compete 4-1 before reading the "Perfil."
d.  Read the "Perfil" on pp. 285 - 286 and complete 4-2 after reading the 1st part.

FILM:
Beginning with our next class meeting, we will devote the last two weeks of the quarter to viewing and analyzing the 1985 Argentine film "La historia oficial."  Prior to each class, you will download and print homework activities from this website and complete them while watching the film on line with Quicktime 7.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  you need a computer with Quicktime 7 to view the film.  If you do not have access to a computer with Quicktime 7 at home, you can watch the film from a computer lab on campus.  The Gordy Hall LRC has Quicktime 7 installed on its I-Macs.
