Life in Academia…

E.W. Scripps School of Journalism

I came to Ohio University all the way from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, just to attend the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, which is one of the best in the nation. Since I'm only a freshman, I feel honored to have even seen the inside of the building…hopefully next year I will get to take more classes in my major. So far the only one I've been able to enroll in is Precision Language--otherwise known as "grammar from hell." J

Magazine Journalism Major

Think big! I am…I hope to one day be an editor working for a nationally known magazine.

A few of my favorite things…

Titanic I know the hype for the movie is way over-rated, but I can't help it!

Ralph Macchio (I get teased about this infatuation so bad, don't even ask.)

Jewel My favorite music to both sing and listen to.

How I waste--oops! I mean spend--my time. Just kidding, really…

Assistant Crime Staff Writer for The Post

I was recently hired by OU's independent student newspaper as the assistant reporter covering the courts beat. I haven't done much work on the paper yet, but next quarter I'll have at least a story a week. Check out The Post online…everyone on the staff does a great job: The Post

Society of Professional Journalists

This quarter carried the theme "Women in the Media," and we had some great panel discussions on women's issues and how they are covered, as well as how women journalists are treated in the media. Since next quarter's theme is "Journalism on the Web," I may have some interesting information to add.

Tiffin Hall

Where I live! It may possibly be the most rundown dorm on campus, and one of the oldest. Sometimes we find dead insects, and we always blow fuses as least three times a day, but we love it anyway. The people who live there are the greatest! It is my favorite place to study (yeah, right), relax, solve other people's crisis situation, cook cuisine in the hot pot, and just LIVE! Most of my time there is spent procrastinating and finding a 1,320,796 things that are suddenly much more important than studying. J

Biographical Information

As I stated above, I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. More specifically, I'm from Moon Township, but people always look at me funny when I say that so usually I stick to the city people have heard of. So yes, I'm from the moon, but before that I lived in three other houses all over Pennsylvania: two in Uniontown and one in Mountville, near Lancaster County (a.k.a. Amish country, the absolute middle of nowhere, but it's beautiful). My family is pretty typical, my house is in a suburb in Moon, where my parents, my little brother and my cocker spaniel live. My mother is a teacher at Moon Middle School and my father works for a company called The Associates. (I’m still trying to figure out exactly what he does.) My brother is a really good baseball player who has made the All-Star Team the past two or three years, and I'm disappointed that I'm going to miss most of his season this year. Yes, we all love the Steelers, and the Pirates, and I especially love the Penguins. I love living near the city so I can attend sporting events, theater productions, and concerts all the time.

I love going to OU and know I made the right choice for a school! I've had a lot of fun meeting new people and trying new things, and plan to continue doing so in the future!

Hobbies

I love e-mail! It keeps me in touch with my best friends from high school, my family, and even professors and other students on campus. It's also very addicting--I spend way too much time using it. However, I am an excellent typist who doesn't really need to look at the keyboard, so my friends love to cover my eyes and watch for me to make a mistake while I type. They're easily amused.

Ping! Ping is the fitness center at OU, and my friends and I try to force ourselves to go almost everyday. I love going there, usually just to work out at my own pace. Last quarter, I joined the Kung Fu Club and took kickboxing at Ping, which I really enjoyed, but just don't have time for this quarter. But it's a great place to go for almost anything you want to do.
