Atlanta Natural Gas: Natural gas is a fossil fuel that comes from inside the ground. This is a non-renewable energy source. In the pure state, natural gas is mostly methane gas. This is the state that the gas is in for heating and cooking within the home or office building. A benefit of natural gas is that it burns clean, which means less harmful byproducts being emitted into the air.  Natural gas is odorless and colorless, which means that you cannot smell it nor can it be sees it in the air. So that consumers know when there is a deadly gas leak, gas companies put in an artificial odor into the gas. This artificial odor smells like rotten eggs and is what alerts consumers to a possible gas leak. Always report this smell to the gas company and then get out of the house until someone arrives to check the home and gives the clearance that the home is safe to reenter.

Natural gas in the United States comes mostly from domestic production. However, there is production that is imported from Canada. The gas is stored in facilities that exceed the needed amounts during the summer, so that there is a reserve for the winter months when natural gas usage increases. This is how the country is able to maintain a steady supply of natural gas to consumers during the winter months.

The price of natural gas is figured on a two-part equation that takes distribution and commodity costs into account. The distribution part of the equation looks at the amount of money it costs to transport the gas from the production area to the gas company and then into the consumer’s home through pipelines. The commodity cost is simply the cost of the gas itself. A break down is then down with the two parts considered then the prices are passed along to the consumer. Commodity cost has been known to contribute to up to 50 percent of natural gas costs.

The pricing of natural gas can be affected by a number of unforeseen factors. These unforeseen factors can cause gas prices to go up even more. Severe winter weather can contribute to the rise in natural gas prices as more and more gas will be needed to heat homes throughout the effected regions. Any disruption in the pipelines that prevents the delivery of the natural gas can affect the prices. A prolonged outage a production plant can cause a rise in the demand for gas and thus affect prices as well.

There are things that consumers can do to help keep their natural gas prices down. One is to lower the thermostat so that while their home is comfortable it is not hot. By wearing long sleeves, pants and socks indoors, you can comfortably lower your thermostat settings. Also, check your furnace to make sure it is running properly. A poorly running furnace can cause for a very high bill each month. Some states allow consumers to shop for where they purchase their natural gas. If your state allows this, then this can be another area where you can lower your natural gas prices each month.
