RESEARCH STATEMENT:
The focus of my research is on the
effects of fire and shelterwood thinning on eastern oak forest regeneration.
My thesis project is composed of three parts. The goal of the first part
is to determine the effects of burning and thinning treatments on the occurance of acorn weevils (Coleoptera:
Curculionidae). I’m capturing adult weevils
using pyramid style traps in addition to observing the occurance
of larvae in acorns caught in seed traps. The second part involves a
germination study to determine the effects of weevil depredation on acorn
germination and overall seedling vigor in Q. prinus and Q.
velutina.
We’ll be using x-ray to determine presence/absence of weevil larvae
within acorns while maintaining viability of the seeds. Lastly, I’m
looking at seed production and the occurrence of mast cycles in these two
species of oak under the same burning and thinning treatments.
