The Labor Practices of NIKE

By Jennifer Hobbs

Nike, the biggest shoe corporation in the world, has been having problems with negative publicity for the past few years.  The negative publicity has to do with the companys' labor practices over in China, Indonesia, South Korea, and Vietnam.  Many human rights groups feel that the workers are not receiving the proper wages and conditions to perform to the best of their ability.  The main problem has to do with the Nike Code of Conduct and whether or not it is being enforced with the correct procedures.  Once Phil Knight, the CEO of Nike, became aware of the publicity Nike was receiving, he jumped on top of the issue as soon as he could.  He had many employees make visits to the factories and delivered a variety of speeches regarding his upcoming actions to improve the situations over seas. However, many question his sincerity and fear that the new conditions within the factories will still lack the quality to provide a healthy environment for the workers.  Has Nike done all they can to improve the labor conditions in Asia?  DETERMINE THAT FOR YOURSELF!
