Stone Lithography Graining, Drawing, Processing and Printing
Use this project to experiment with tusche washes within lithography.
They will allow you to acheive liquid, atmospheric, and painterly qualities
within your image. You may choose to combine them with crayon/pencil
drawing or marks.
Experiment!!
Remember to keep a detailed grease map! Especially noting if you have used solvent or water washes!!
GROUP LITHOGRAPH
Image size: open (depends on dimensions of stone)
Paper size: open (depends on dimensions of stone)
Edition size: 3 (1/3 to 3/3)---one set of prints for each member of group
Content:
Content Generator
Each person will choose one word and one image.
As a group make connections, stories, arguments, etc between all the random
bits of information together.
Edit out those that are not needed.
Clarify the random bits into one image.
Hold on to your personal choices for use in your second assignment (or
if you are uninspired by them—trade with a classmate).
Technique:
Basic Stone Lithography
This project will walk you through stone lithography from graining to
printing.
Working in a group will allow you support while trying these new, detailed
processes.
Use this project as a way to take chances with your drawing techniques!
Get in some useful practice before you move to your own stone!
And pay attention during processing—you will be doing it all yourself
the next time around.
You are required to process and print your stone with the supervision
of Scott or me during this first assignment.
This means that you must schedule a printing appointment with either of
us some time between Friday, January 14 and Sunday, January 17.
3-STEP STONE LITHOGRAPH
Image size: open (depends on dimensions of stone)
Paper size: open (depends on dimensions of stone)
Edition size: 3 (1/3 to 3/3) at each step
Content: Content Generator
From the one word and one image chosen in class, generate an idea for
this project.
Produce a sketch of the possible image/images for an individual critique
on January 20th.
Technique:
Drawing with Washes
Color Ink Mixing and Printing
Counter Etching
This project will walk you through the more intermediate stone lithography
techniques of drawing and processing tusche washes, color ink mixing and
printing, and counter etching.
You will be taking a single stone and image through each of these processes—turning
in an edition of prints at step:
January 20 editioning; GROUP PRINT DUE; wash demo; individual critiques
January 25 work day
January 27 BLACK & WHITE VERSION DUE; color ink mixing and printing
demos
February 1 work day
February 3 COLOR VERSION DUE; counter etch demo
February 8 work day
February 10 TWO-COLOR VERSION DUE; aluminum plate demos
A single grade sheet will be given at the close of the project.
***Make sure to use the T & bar registration system for this stone.
***Print extras when at the first color step—you will need them
to print the second
color over! Start with at least 15 sheets of your good print paper!
ALUMINUM PLATE LITHOGRAPH

Paper size: open (depends on dimensions of your plate)
Edition size: 3 (1/3 to 3/3)

Technique:
Aluminum Plate Litho Drawing, Processing and Printing
Toner Transfer
Use this project to experiment with aluminum plate lithography.
Though the processes are slightly different, you will be able to achieve
a similar rich effect as with stone!
We will also learn a new “drawing” process on transferring
toner to the plate.
This can allow you to achieve different effects then available with the
drawing products!
For this assignment you are NOT allowed to use toner transfer as the sole
image creator! Transfer bits in and manipulate them with drawing products—right
over the top!
***Remember that the aluminum plates are fragile and cannot hold up to “erasing” with a razor or snake slip!! They are a one shot deal!!
3-COLOR LITHOGRAPH
Image size: open (depends on dimensions of stone and plates)
Paper size: open (depends on dimensions of stone and plates)
Edition size: 5 (1/5 to 5/5)
Content: Open
Technique:
Designing an image in 3 additive colors
Calendaring Paper
Mylar Transfer
Punch and Pin Registration
We have already created one print in multiple colors through counter-etching
and reduction or addition to the original stone.
For this project you will design an image in three colors from the start.
Each of these colors will be drawn onto a separate stone or plate and
then printed onto the same sheet of paper.
You will have two aluminum plate layers and one stone layer. You should
consider your stone image to be the “key” image, which should
be printed last and in the darkest color. This image should be the first
that you draw, so that you may use it to design the final two layers.
Design the layers to work together somehow. This does not mean that they
have to lock together into one image. They could be three isolated layers
that when printed together, create an electric composition.
For this project, we will learn and use the advanced registration system
of pin registration. This entails adhereing small pins to the stone or
plates which match up with pins on your paper. This system, coupled with
the techniques of mylar transfer and calandering the paper, should allow
you spot on registration in this print.
***You will be “checking-out” a pair of pins from the shop
to complete this assignment. These pins should be returned to me by our
final meeting time. If these pins are not returned to me, you must purchase
the pins from the shop for $7. You grade will not be officially turned
in until pins or cash are given to me!
FINAL/EXCHANGE PRINT
Image size: open (depends on dimensions of stone)
Paper size: 11” x 14” ONLY---MUST BE THIS SIZE—NO LARGER
OR SMALLER!!!
(can be a margin or bleed print)
Edition size: 12 (1/12 to 12/12)
(10 for you and your classmates, 1 for Rebecca, and 1 for the Print Archive)
Content: Open
Technique: You will have the opportunity to select the lithography process(es)
to create this print. This allows you to use the process(es) to which
you are the most suited.
The edition number is higher then you are used to, but this allows for
good print training as well as a chance to trade prints with your fellow
classmates.
On our scheduled finals day we will formally trade our editions.
Paper folders and your final grades will be given to you at that time.
