COMPOSITE (Painting/Collage)
Image size: a minimum of 8” x 10”  to as large as you would like!

Content:   For this project create a composite image from 6 or more images.

Techniques:  Experiment with Selection Tools, Layers, and Image Enhancement techniques to create a new image from your source material.  An emphasis should be placed on merging/blending the separate images. Keep that this project allows for a painterly or collage based approach.Use it as an opportunity to explore mark, color, and outrageous effects.
Take risks!

Requirements:
 1.  For your source material, use at least 6 images total. Use at least 1 image scanned from something that holds your mark on it (handwriting, drawing, painting, etc). Use at least 1 image scanned from a 3-D object. Use at least 2 original images of your own creation (photos you have taken, section of past artworks, etc). Use at least 2 found images (from printed materials or the web).

2.   You must turn in--- a GOOD printed version (this must be presented appropriately!) and an electronic version (flattened JPEG or PDF) in the dropbox (labeled your last name followed by composite2)

For Inspiration make sure to look at the work of Dave McKean!

COMPOSITE (Photography)
Image size:  a minimum of 100 square inches to as large as you would like!

Content: Self-Portrait – beginning with two snap shots of yourself go in any direction you would like!

Techniques: This project should be viewed as an extension of the first Composite Project.  This image should focus on realism.  Do your best to perfectly blend the images you are combining.  Make the surreal place of your own creation feel as believable as possible!

Requirements:
 1.  For your source material, use at least 6 images total--at least 2 self portrait photographs. The other source imagery is completely up to you...

2.   You must turn in--- a GOOD printed version (this must be presented appropriately!) and an electronic version (flattened JPEG or PDF) in the dropbox (labeled your last name followed by composite2)

For Inspiration make sure to look at the work of Anthony Goicolea and Kahn & Seleznick!

COMPOSITE (Frankenstein)

Image size: at least 6” x 4”
(on 8.5” x 11” inkjet, high quality paper)

Content: For this project I want you to create your own being. See this as a Frankenstein creation--something all your own, that you bring to life from bits of different images.
Create this being and place it in its intended environment.
This “being” can be as realistic or fantastic as you would like.
You can make yourself the perfect mate or a medieval style dragon.

Techniques: Experiment with Selection Tools, Layers, and Image Enhancement techniques to create a new image from your original source material. An emphasis should be placed on merging/blending the separate images. Try to allow the images to feel as natural together as possible. Remember to think about the lighting source and effects in play in the environment that you place this being. How do you have to alter the being to “live” in this space?

Requirements:
1. This image must be created and printed in Grayscale.
2. For your source material—Use at least 6 images total (1 image can have the entire desired background or environment; 5 images can contain bits—arms, legs, torsos, wings, etc—for the being)
(These images can have extreme variety, depending on the effect that you want to achieve.)
*Use at least 1 image scanned from printed matter.
*Use at least 1 image scavenged from the World Wide Web.
*Use at least 2 original images
3. You must turn in---
*a printed version
*an electronic version
*all source material
(turn in the electronic materials in a folder labeled with your last name and project title in the Drop Box)

COMPOSITE (Media's Effect on...)
Image size:     at least 6” x 4”  (on at least 8.5” x 11” inkjet quality paper)

Content:   Media’s effect on... This can be translated in MANY ways! Media can be defined as: Music, Reality Television, the World Wide Web,video games, Ebay,etc...
Tell a story with this piece about the effect of media on: you, me, the human species, relationships, your baby cousin, your dog, etc...

Techniques:  Experiment with Selection Tools, Layers, and Image Enhancement techniques to create a new image from original source material.  An emphasis should be placed on merging/blending the separate images.  Try to allow the images to feel as natural together as possible.  Remember to think about the lighting source and effects in play in the environment.

Requirements:
1) This image must be created and printed in Grayscale
2) For your source material
--Use at least 5 images total (These images can have extreme variety, depending on the effect that you want to achieve.  You also may feel free to use as much or as little of each image as you need.  All images may be distorted/altered in any way imaginable.  Use them as a stepping stone to form and content.)
--Use at least 1 image scanned from appropriated printed matter (2-D)
--Use at least 1 image scanned from a 3-D object
--Use at least 1 image of texture or pattern that is continuous and the size of the final image (use masks, translucency, blending, etc to isolate sections of this ground)
--Use at least 2 original images (drawings, photographs, past artwork, etc)
3) You must turn in
---a printed version
---an electronic version
---all source material
(turn in the electronic materials in a folder labeled with your last name and project title in the Drop Box)

MIXED MEDIA PROJECT
Image size:               Open
Content:                    Open
Try to link the next two projects directly to your studio work!
                                   Make them useful to you!
Requirements/
Techniques:
For this project, you must integrate digital information with another media.
There are MANY directions to go with this piece!  Such as:

  • ironed on to fabric, wood, plaster, etc

  • projection on a wall, object, etc

  • embedded in wax on an object or encaustic painting

  • printed on cakes or cookies

  • printed over or under painting, drawing, collage, photo techniques, prints, etc

  • used as a negative/positive to create prints or cyanotypes

Design a digital image specifically for the eventual surface.
Tie the use of the other media, found material, or alternative surface to the content in the digital image.
Make the combination of the materials feel appropriate!
Allow the materials/images to support and further each other!
This project focuses on using the digital to take a supporting role in the work.

WEBPAGE
Image size: Must fit on an average computer monitor
(about 800 x 600 pixels)
Must be designed in Web Safe colors
Must be 72 dpi (since it will only exist on screen)

Content: Open
BUT…..You must consider the interactivity of this image.
Design the original image with this in mind! You want a strong,
creative design that also allows the viewer to successfully
interact with it. You must always be thinking about both
form and function!

To prepare for this piece, go to the following website
and view the variety of webpage designs:
www.thebestdesigns.com
www.mediainspirstion.com
Find one which you believe is very strong in both form and function.
Find one that you believe lacks in one of these categories.
Write a one-page comparison of these two pieces.

I also recommend looking at (for technical web design information!):
http://webmonkey.wired.com

Technique:
Design the image in websafe color only!
It should be 72 dpi and 800 x 600 pixels in size.
(though understand that some browsers display closer to 760 x 410
—meaning that less of your image would be visible on these browsers.
The majority of your active areas could exist in this smaller area…
offering them quickly to all browser users.)
After perfecting your image you will then slice it in Photoshop
or Image Ready, dividing the image to allow sections to become active.
You must include 12 active areas in your image. These will eventually
link to your fellow classmates images and the assignment home.
You can integrate these within the image or make them true, labeled buttons—
the design is up to you.

The webpages will then be uploaded to your classes section of my teaching website at:
http://oak.cats.ohiou.edu/~haviland/

WEBPAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Remember to limit your image size to 800 by 600 pixels at 72dpi.
And only work in web safe color!
(in Photoshop you can limit your color under Photoshop>Color Settings>Settings and choose Web Graphics Default from the list. In Image Ready you can limit your color to Web in the Optimize Palette in the Color section.)
Visit http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/reference/color_codes/ for hexadecimal color codes and swatches!
When beginning this assignment create a new folder on your desktop and label it with your last name. This is where you will save your final document (and the computer will automatically save the support files for the html file!).
This folder should be placed in the drop box on the due date. You should then double check with me that all the correct files were successfully transferred! The “function” of your page depends on this!
You must name the final document like those below -- yourlastname.html – do not capitalize, add punctuation, or a space...simply your last name in small letters followed by .html
You have two possibilities for making your image active in Image Ready:
1) image maps -requires you to work with Layers
-allows you to create shaped active areas
2) slicing -allows you to work with one flat Photoshop image
-the selections/active areas can only be based on a grid

**To create roll-overs, your image should have layers! These are the URLs that must be linked to in your image (minus your own!):
artoncomphome.html
beck.html
gaspers.html
gettler.html
lanasa.html
leeman.html
lyons.html
mitsch.html
moyer.html
muhoray.html
potoka.html

ARTIST RESEARCH PRESENTATION
For this assignment you will be required to research a digital artist/designer of your choice.
This research will be shared with the class as a five-minute presentation.
In addition you will be required to turn in a written document, walking me through the presentation. This document should include the visual examples.
Begin by introducing the artist/designer, their life and what kind of artwork they create.
You are also responsible for discussing two examples of their artwork. Focus on how the artist/designer uses design elements and principles/formal issues within these works.
You are required to have visuals examples of the artworks you will discuss.
Expose your artist’s relationship to digital media and how they use it in their own work.
Try to technically break down one piece by the artist.
What software was used to create it? How was it created within that program?
You may also want to talk about how the artist has influenced your own work if it is applicable.
To complete this project you can use any research means available to you: the University libraries, public libraries, books, articles, the World Wide Web, etc.
Three research sources are required and should be listed at the end of the written document.

Every student should research a different artist, so check with me before you make your final decision.

FINAL
Image size: Open
Content: Open
Technique: Open

This project is left very open for you. It is a chance for you to produce a dream project.
A written proposal with sketches/visuals of the final piece will be required before work on the project can begin. This proposal must be at least 250 words in length and discuss to following:
*the concept
*the formal issues (color, texture, value, composition, scale, etc…)
*the techniques to be used to produce the piece
(specifically highlight those technical processes that will have to be researched or experimented with before production of the piece begins. Where will you begin this research? How will you address this experimentation?)
*the way the final piece will be presented

I repeat: Visuals must be included in the proposal!!
Include sketches, photographs, source material, images that inspired the piece----basically anything that can support your case or that can help explain your intentions, do the proper research, etc!!
