Description:
This course is designed to provide students with samples of literature produced by diverse writers representing the wide diversity of peoples of the Americas—Amerindian, Caribbean, Native North American, Mestizo/Ladino, and diasporic African. In this class students will focus on works that deal with internal colonialism, imperialism, indigenism, immigration, oppression, and exploitation. Students will examine regional differences in what the notion "American" means in hemispheric terms and in the politics of nationalism.

- One 6-8 page paper on Galeano and Neruda (20% of total grade)
- One 6-8 page paper on Carpentier and Castellanos (20% of total grade)
- One 15-page research paper on Silko (45% of total grade)
- Daily reading notes and participation (15% of total grade).
One purpose of this course is to provide students with experience in scholarly research. To that end, we will be using our first four texts—those by Galeano, Neruda, Carpentier, and Castellanos—as material building towards an understanding of the dynamics of conquest, imperialism, and indigenous/African resistance. Our final text, Silko’s Almanac of the Dead, will then serve as the main text of the class to the extent that it synthesizes the concepts and histories provided by our other books and frames them within an indigenous perspective.
Accordingly, students will write one short paper on Galeano and Neruda and another on Carpentier and Castellanos as preparation for a longer research paper focusing on issues developed in Almanac of the Dead. The final paper will include material from each of the two shorter papers as well as three outside sources.
Expectations:

Come to class daily and on time.

Read assignments before class periods.

Take extensive notes for participation in class discussions.

notes daily (except on days when a paper is due).
- Participate in group and class discussions
- Turn off all cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic devices while in class.
- Never record (audio, photo, or video) any portion of a class without my approval.
- Never do work for another class during our class time.
