English 399 Paper 2: Derrida & Heidegger

Due: Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Length: 5-7 typed pages (250 words per page)

The purpose of this paper is to write an essay in which you explore in detail the issues surrounding one key theme in both Derrida's or Heidegger's work. While you must be concise, you must also give brief and pointed examples to support your claims.

Choose one of the following topics for an essay about either Derrida or Heidegger or both.

Derrida Topics:

1. What is Derrida's argument about the function of the Pharmakos or scapegoat? What role does Derrida's notion of the pharmakon in this? Optional additional part: How is Derrida's argument here an example of his deconstructive method? [PLEASE, no papers just on the speech/writing distinction, although this will certainly play a role in your discussion.]

2. How does Derrida describe the text at the beginning of "Plato's Pharmacy"? How does this differ from our conventional notions of textuality? How does the text relate to the Pharmakon? Optional question: How might his notion of the text complicate Plato's argument [but again, no papers just on the speech/writing distinction]?

Heidegger Topics:

1. What does Heidegger mean when he says that "truth happens"? How is this different from our conventional notion of truth? How does truth happen in poetry?

2. Choose one of Heidegger's examples (such as the peasant shoes or the temple) of an artwork. How does either example relate to the key concepts in his essay?

3. What, according to Heidegger, is the problem with seeing art as representational? How does that conception limit our notion of art? What alternative does Heidegger offer?
