Description:

This course is for advanced and adventurous writers who are looking for challenging reading and writing experiences. It functions as a writing workshop in which we focus on specific texts, themes related to those texts, and questions about writing that grow out of our interaction with those texts.

The readings will center on the novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and work out from there to related sources and questions, including questions about Freshman Composition.

We will focus on two things: 1) the relationships between philosophy, literature, and composition; and 2) the relationship between a text and its "source" texts (other texts which it is addressing and reworking).

We will practice composing and revising expository essays which are well organized, logically coherent, and effective for their purpose and audience.
