White Oaks, New Mexico
Home Up

White Oaks is located in Lincoln County about 11 miles northeast of Carrizozo.  Go about two miles north of Carrizozo (the Lincoln County seat) on U.S. 54, then turn right onto New Mexico route 349 and go about nine miles.  At the time of my visit in April 2000, there was a billboard at the US 54/NM 349 intersection advertising activities in White Oaks, so while it was mostly ghostly, there were some inhabitants and some attempts to attract tourists.

Since then, activity in White Oaks has increased, and that includes attempts both to preserve the history of the town as well as to attract tourists.  The town even has an official website now, whiteoaksnewmexico.com.

I have so many photos of White Oaks, both mine and contributed by others, past and present, that I've divided them up onto four separate pages.  The links are below.

bulletThe Exchange Bank and Brown Building.  The former is long gone.  The latter still exists, has undergone extensive renovation, and many visitors over the years have mistaken it for the former.
bulletThe Schoolhouse.  Refurbished and now a center of activity.
bulletThe Gumm House.  Renovated to its former grandeur.
bulletThe Hoyle Mansion.  As of 2007, still in need of work, and it has an interesting history.
