South Dakota Ghost Towns

SOUTH DAKOTA

In July 2001, I had an occasion to visit two ghost towns in the Black Hills region of South Dakota.  A comprehensive listing of ghost towns in this area can be found in the book Black Hills Ghost Towns by Watson Parker and Hugh K. Lambert (Swallow Press/Ohio University Press, 1974).  This book, while written now almost 30 years ago, is informative and is still useful to anyone wishing to explore the ghost towns in this area. 

As I've done on the pages describing the ghost towns I've visited in other states, I compare the condition of any buildings and so forth shown in photos in the Parker/Lambert book with what the scene looked like in 2001.  In the two cases, things have changed considerably.  One story connected to the Latchstring Inn in the town of Savoy is tragic, and it's described on that town's page.  I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any comments about my pictures and descriptions or who might have any photos of these towns they'd be willing to send me or lend me to scan so I can add them to the site.
