Sherwood, Texas
Home Up

Sherwood is located just south of US 67 about two miles northeast of Mertzon in Irion County.  Take Farm Road 72 about 1.2 miles east of where it intersects with US 67.

This town is described by Baker as being one of the most picturesque in all of Texas because of the large number of both abandoned and occupied buildings and its cemetery.  I wouldn't call it that in 1999.  The town is still occupied, and, except for the old Irion County courthouse in the center of town, I could find no unoccupied buildings.  I would guess that most have either fallen or been knocked down, and there was even some new construction going up in places.

The Irion County Courthouse as photographed by Baker in 1982.  The tower in the center has a false clock cast into concrete on each of its four faces, and the time set into the clock is supposedly that of the exact time of Abraham Lincoln's death.

The old Irion County courthouse as it looked on October 31, 1999.  It's pretty much unchanged in the 17 years since it was photographed by Baker, although there is now a chain-link fence around it.  The town also appears to be more built up around the building now.  On one side of the building was a set-up of tables and so forth as might be used for a community gathering place or picnic.  I don't know if the building itself is used for anything.

On 2/8/04 I received the following email from a resident of the area who saw this website:

"They still use the courthouse as a community center, and a deputy sheriff has even moved a travel trailer onto the premises so he can stay there while he is working."
