Pinos Altos is another not-very-ghostly ghost town located in the
southwestern part of the state, seven miles north of Silver City on New Mexico
route 15 in Grant County. Several nice photos of the town appear in the book Ghost
Towns, Gamblers, and Gold, by Chuck Lawliss, copyright 1985. This is a
tabloid-sized, coffee-table book with lots of large color photos that I presume
are pretty much contemporary with the copyright date.

This is a photo of the Pinos Altos Opera House that
appears across pages 132 and 133 of Lawliss's book (1985). The photo is too
large to fit completely on my scanner, so this is only a portion of the
photo. |

This photo of the opera house from a different angle was
taken by me on April 5, 2000. The Buckhorn Saloon next door was
going full tilt, so the area was packed with cars. |

I took this photo of the saloon on April 5, 2000. The
small sign had been repainted in the interim. |
