Oxford, Texas
Home Up

Oxford is in Llano County 10.5 miles south of the city of Llano and 27.2 miles north of Fredericksburg on Texas highway 16.  As with other ghost towns located on main highways, this one is not completely ghostly.  When we visited, it was at the end of the day, and the sun was about set, so the only photo we could get was taken with the headlights of our car illuminating the structure.

Baker's book (the second one) shows two photos, one of a former blacksmith shop located right on route 16, and the other of an abandoned house.  He also described a well-maintained cemetery.  We couldn't find the house or the cemetery in the darkness, but we did photograph the blacksmith shop.  Having visited the town only four years after Baker, we didn't expect much to have changed, and the appearance of the blacksmith shop during our visit was much as when Baker photographed it.

Photo of the blacksmith shop appearing on page 126 of Baker's second book.  It was taken in 2000.

Photo of the same building taken by me in November 2004.  Because it was after dark, I illuminated the building with the headlights of my car to take the picture.  The building did not appear to have changed much in the four years between the photos.
