Murphys is located in Calaveras County on California State Route 4 about 8
miles east off of state route 49 from Angel's Camp.

This photo of the Murphys Hotel (originally called the
Mitchler Hotel) appears on page 239 of Florin's book. It is of the
Algiers Street side of the building. |

I took this photo of the Murphys Hotel on April 11, 1993
taken from the Main Street side. |
| On July 8, 2006, I received an email from the Front Desk
Manager of the Murphys Historic Hotel (which it's now called) who had seen this
site and kindly corrected my earlier confusion about the status of the hotel and
how it might have changed in the time between the two photos above. She
reports that the hotel has not undergone extensive exterior renovation.
She also says that the outer walls of the hotel are original and that it was the
first non-wood structure in Murphys along with the fire doors which still stand.
The Murphys Historic Hotel is a fully functioning hotel with
its own website at www.murphyshotel.com.
It looks like a wonderful place to stay!
