Morris Ranch, Texas
Home Up

Morris Ranch is in Gillespie County southwest of Fredericksburg.  Take Texas 16 southwest from Fredericksburg about 2.2 miles to Farm Road 2093 and turn right (west).  Go about 7.2 miles and turn left (south) on Morris-Tivydale Road.  Then drive about 1.9 miles to a four-way intersection that was the center of Morris Ranch.  There are no signs indicating that it's Morris Ranch, and nothing at this intersection makes you think you're at the center of a former town.

Morris Ranch was founded in the 1850s by Francis Morris, who bred and trained thoroughbred racehorses.  In his original Ghost Town book, Baker shows two photos from the town.  One is of the original Morris Ranch headquarters building, and the other is of the 1893 schoolhouse.  Today, both buildings appear to be privately owned.  Indeed, while the headquarters building is just off the highway to the west of the four-way intersection, the schoolhouse is well off the highway on a hill just beyond the headquarters building behind a fence and gate.  Both appear now to be privately owned.

Photo of the same building taken in November 2004.  It appeared a bit rundown (note the fascia falling away from the upper part of the roof), but it also appeared occupied.

Photo of the same building taken in November 2004.  I got as close as I could to snap the picture, sticking my camera through the gate across the driveway.  The building appears relatively unchanged, at least externally, although it looks like the roof was replaced, but, like the headquarters building, it now appears to be a private residence.

Here's a photo of the schoolhouse sent to me on May 2, 2008 by someone who saw this site.
