Mokelumne Hill is located on California State Route 49 in Calaveras County.

 |
| The stone front is all that's left of the Mayer & Son store,
built in 1854. This photo appears on page 233 in Florin's book (1971). |

| Photo of Mayer & Son store at far left taken in the late 1950s (note
the vintage car) by Henning Olesen of Denmark, who worked in central
California in the 1950s and who saw this website. The building at the
far right was the first three-story building in Gold Rush Country. |

| Another photo of the Mayer & Son store sent in by Mr. Olesen
and taken from a different angle. |

| A photo of the same stone front taken by me on April 11,
1993. It hadn't changed too much, and it had been fenced off. |

Here is a street scene, April 1993. |

Here is another photo from the same general vantage point
taken in the late 1950s by Mr. Olesen. Note the vintage cars and truck
and the old-fashioned Shell gasoline sign. |

Sign attached to a building in Mokelumne Hill during my
visit in 1993 tells of
the building's various incarnations during its history.
In 1855 it was Levinson's
Store. In 1862, it was the Dr. A. H. Hearchner Drug Store. In
1865, it was leased by Wells Fargo. It was an upholstery shop in the
1890s, and it was the Frank Peck Garage in the 1920s. |
