Hillsboro is located in Sierra County 33 miles southwest of Truth
or Consequences. It is at the intersection of New Mexico routes 152
and 27 about 9 miles west of exit 63 off of I-25. It is still inhabited
today. Many of the landmarks highlighted in both books are still
visible today, although the Main Street scene from the Shermans' book is much
changed. It looks as though much of what was crumbling in the early 1970s
is now totally gone and replaced with modern construction.

This is the photo of the old Sierra
County Courthouse appearing on page 113H in the Shermans' book (1975).
Not much was left standing except for the remnants of a few walls.
The front door is the large opening with the curved top and steps at right. |

Here's another picture of the courthouse front door
appearing on page 158 in Looney's book (1968). |

This is a scene similar to the top photo in this series
taken on Aril 5, 2000. It
has crumbled a bit more, but it is mostly unchanged. I even
managed to get the shadows similar to those in the top photo. I
received an email in March 2007 from someone who tells me that efforts
are underway to have the courthouse declared a historic site, and
measures are being taken to prevent it from deteriorating further. |

This is yet another view of the front door, but from the other angle. It's on page 106 of Varney's
book (1981). The former jail is in the background. |

At left above is the through-the-jail-door
scene that takes up the entirety of page 115H of the Shermans'
book (1975). At right is an attempt to take the same scene on April
5, 2000. Unfortunately, the door was jammed shut and could not be
opened without excavating a significant amount of dirt from around the
bottom. |

This is a photo of a jail door appearing on page
25 of Florin's book (1971). I did not see a door with this
pattern of metal bars during my visit, but I'm told that they are still
there as of March 2007, just on the inside entrances to the jail cells. |
