Gage, New Mexico
Home Up

Gage is in Luna County located right off of I-10, on the south side, about 20 miles west of Deming.  It is not mentioned in the Sherman book, but the Varney book has a listing, and it recommends a stop at the ruins of the town, since it's so easy to get to.  Unfortunately, it is no longer worth stopping at Gage, at least if your purpose is ghost town hunting, because when I visited there on April 9, 2002, I found no trace of any of the buildings photographed by Varney 25+ years ago.

There is a SIGN for Gage along I-10 as seen in this 2008 photo, but as I said, there is no Gage there.  Just a few tourist trap-type places.

These two sets of ruins are shown on page 138 of Varney's book (1981).  I could find no evidence of either.  There is now a large, modern Citgo gas station/Dairy Queen restaurant constructed in a style that looks like it might have been built to imitate the commercial strip shown in the top photo.  I even spent some time looking around the place, while at the same time trying to avoid arousing suspicion (I ordered a blizzard--that always quells suspicions, especially in a Dairy Queen!), in an attempt to find any evidence that the new structure contained parts of the old.  But I could not.  I would guess that all of the old structures were torn down when the new one was put in.

On January 31, 2008, I received this email from someone with an interesting connection to Gage:

About 50 years ago, I ran away from home and was heading to California and my '50 Olds transmission went out somewhere near Gage.  We stayed with a couple named Jim and Mary, they operated a restaurant and he ran a service station.  There was a motel next door but was vacant. I went back four to five years ago looking for it and found a site that I think was it but it was on the north side of I-10.  The concrete floors were in place on both the restaurant and the garage and I think I found the motel site next to it. We were traveling down US 80 at the time and I can remember seeing Gage and Separ and the Continental Divide; we really did not know where we were but your picture reminds me of it.
