Fry, Texas
Home Up

Fry turned out to be uneventful.  It's located near the intersection of Farm Roads 2492 and 585 in Brown County, about six miles north of the intersection of 585 with US 67 & 84.  This intersection is about two miles west of the city of Bangs which is on 67 & 84.  You actually travel west down a county road just north of the intersection of 2492 and 585.

Baker's book features two photos of the site, one showing the remnants of a concrete sidewalk leading to nowhere, and the other the concrete footings that remain from refinery equipment that once occupied the site.  I found the concrete footings, and they looked to be pretty much unchanged since Baker photographed them in 1984.  I was unable to find the concrete sidewalk.  It seemed that much of the town site is now behind a fence and on private property, so it's possible that the sidewalks still exist but that they are not accessible from public highways.

This is the photo taken by Baker in 1984 of the concrete footings remaining from the Amerada gasoline plant.  Note the fence to the left.  This vantage point was unavailable to me because to get to it would have required scaling the fence and standing on private property, which I did not want to do.  The road I came in on is at the far left just this side of the trees (it's really not visible).

These are two photos taken of the concrete footings on October 30, 1999.  The vantage point is from the other side of the fence mentioned above.  Things look unchanged except for the trees and brush, which have grown up considerably in the intervening 15 years.  You can even match up the little pipes sticking up out of the ground between the old and new views.
