Chance City, New Mexico

Chance City is in Luna County about four miles south and west of Gage (itself a ghost town that is now completely gone) off of I-10 about 20 miles west of Deming.  The town is featured in both the Sherman and Varney books, but, unfortunately, neither has any photos of it.  Both describe foundation ruins, and I found those without a problem.  Several photos taken by me on April 9, 2002 are below.  The second photo shows my van in the background.  The last photo shows what appears to be an old mine entrance structure in the center-left mid-ground on the hillside.  This structure is also visible in the background of the seventh photo (counting left to right).  In the left background of the fifth photo is a windmill feeding a watering hole for grazing cattle, several of whom were upset with my arrival and walked away in a huff.
