CALIFORNIA

I visited the towns below on April 11, 1993.  There are many books about California ghost towns, and some of the most famous ghost towns in all of ghost town-dom are in California.  I used the following two books for comparisons:

bulletGhost Towns of the West, text and photographs by William Carter (Lane Magazine and Book Company, Menlo Park, California, 1971)
bulletGhost Towns of the West by Lambert Florin (Promontory Press/Superior Publishing Company, 1971, 1972)

I do not know if the photos in these books are contemporary with their publication dates, but I would guess that they're close.

Here's a photo contributed by someone who saw this website.  His ancestors, many of whom were miners, lived in Calaveras County, California during the 1800s and the gold boom.

The photo above is of miners working at the Ranch Mine in Calaveras County.  It was apparently taken in the mid-1890s.
