Belmont, Texas
Home Up

Belmont is in Gonzales County at the intersection of US 90A and Texas 80.  Being at the intersection of two main highways, it is not isolated and still has some residents.  But there are some remains around to be seen.

Baker's book (the second one) shows one photo, and it's of a decaying playground swingset.  He describes a "derelict stone commercial building" and a "vacant brick school," but he does not have photos of these.  I took some photos of these during my visit.

Baker's photo (page 6) of the decaying swingset outside the school.  From 1999.

The swingset as it appeared during my visit in November 2004.  Not much changed in five years, but the brush around it has grown up some.

The vacant school.  It is a few feet away from the swingset.

The still-functioning post office.

The distance between the signs in each direction on US 90A is only about 500 yards.  Blink and you'll miss the town.
