WGAR (1220)
1947/07/04   Celebration of WGAR's power increase from 5,000 to 50,000 watts.  WGAR began broadcasting in 1930 with a power of 500 watts.  Power increased to 1000 watts in 1932 and 5000 watts in 1938.

Features Van Patrick, Bob Neal, and baseball announcer Jack Raney.  Features interviews of Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck (WGAR broadcast Indians games at the time), Cleveland Mayor Thomas A. Burke and Ohio Governor Thomas J. Herbert.  WGAR was the first radio station in the country to receive RCA's new 50,000-watt broadcasting equipment following World War II.  A variety of local and national dignitaries recite their congratulations to the station.

Also includes tributes and well-wishes from sister stations KMPC Los Angeles and WJR Detroit.

Some comments from Bob Vernon about the early 1970s at WGAR:

"In '71 and '72, we had just started doing the high profile personality oldies format; we were one of only two or three stations in the country experimenting with it, and we were still feeling our way with how to put it together—everything from slogans to jingles to the bits we did.  From 2008 hindsight it sounds weird, but we were also experimenting on just how 'adult' we wanted the humor to be.  I guess essentially we were an adult version of 1960's bubble gum radio.  By '74, we pretty much had the formula we wanted, but in the early years, I tried out various 'humor bits' and ideas which you'll hear—some survived and some didn't."

WGAR-FM (99.5)
WGAR-FM 99.5 1952/08/-- ----- A magnificent piece of radio history, this is the sign-on of WGAR-FM.  Included is a welcome by announcer Hal Morgan from the Cleveland Public Auditorium where the Cleveland Summer Orchestra was playing, short speeches by John F. Platt, then president of the WGAR Broadcasting Company, and Thomas A. Burke, then mayor of Cleveland, and a description by WGAR chief engineer Robert Fox about the many advantages of FM over AM.  Mr. Fox concludes with a demonstration of FM's superiority by playing a violin piece both with and without the high frequencies cut off.  I hope Edwin Howard Armstrong was listening!

Interestingly enough, after undergoing several incarnations over the years, the station occupying 99.5 FM in Cleveland still (as of November 2007) goes by the WGAR-FM calls, and it has a country music format.
