1930s
1934/12/10   With host Covina Wright.  A brief segment of a music show from the days when the WABC call letters were actually assigned to the CBS-owned flagship station in New York.  The WABC we all know and love didn't come into existence until the mid-1940s with the divestiture of the blue network by NBC and the creation of the American Broadcasting Company.  With the emergence of a new network with the same initials as its flagship station, CBS no longer wanted the WABC calls and adopted WCBS for 880 in New York.  With the WABC calls now available, ABC changed the calls of its flagship in New York, WJZ, to WABC.  This clip is nice because it ends with the announcer stating that "this is the Columbia Broadcasting System" and then giving the WABC calls. 7 Unscoped 2290/HD
1950s
1956/06/23 11:29 "Make Believe Ballroom" with Martin Block.  Mr. Block counts down the top 9 hits according to Cashbox Magazine.  I originally obtained a 10-minute scoped version of this with all of the spots of Mr. Block plugging Del Monte canned vegetables and Liggett & Myers Cigarettes as a great present for Father's Day intact but all of the songs cut out.  I went ahead and restored the aircheck to its original length by reinserting all of the music (which was no easy feat to find!).  I think it turned out pretty well, though, and what helped is the very high quality of the original, scoped recording. 10/31 Scoped/Unscoped 1212/HD
1958/11/-- ------ "Make Believe Ballroom" with Martin Block.  Mr. Block counts down the top 7 hits according to Cashbox Magazine.  There's also a wonderful period WABC station ID.  Click here to hear it.  Mr. Block spends lots of time plugging Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, Cadbury, Flako Pie Crust Mix, and Howard Clothes.  Very high quality audio. 9 Scoped 1212/HD
