With host Covina
Wright. A brief segment of a music show from the days when the WABC
call letters were actually assigned to the CBS-owned flagship station in New
York. The WABC we know today didn't come into existence until the
mid-1940s with the divestiture of the blue network by NBC and the creation
of the American Broadcasting Company. With the emergence of a new
network with the same initials as its flagship station, CBS no longer wanted
the WABC calls and adopted WCBS for 880 in New York. (Arthur Godfrey
discusses this in a 1946 WCBS radio documentary listed farther down on this
page.) With the WABC calls now available, ABC changed the calls of its
flagship in New York, WJZ, to WABC. This clip is nice because it ends
with the announcer stating that "this is the Columbia Broadcasting System"
and then giving the WABC calls. Certainly something you'd never hear
today, this is a cool piece of radio history! |

1980 rebroadcast of a
September 28, 1974 interview of John Lennon by Dennis Elsas. Mix
of music and discussion, and Lennon reads the weather, does commercials,
introduces songs, and so forth. Mr. Lennon's album "Walls and Bridges"
had just been introduced. Rebroadcast introduced by Mr. Elsas. I
don't know if this was done as a commemorative because Mr. Lennon had just
been shot. The show is complete except for the final six minutes,
which is missing. Mr. Elsas is just beginning to thank Mr. Lennon for
appearing on his program when the recording ends. In spite of this,
the recording is of high quality and a nice remembrance of John Lennon. |
