  Cindy Schwinn is a junior at Ohio University in the school of Business Administration.  She is majoring in management information systems with a  minor in  retail merchandising.  She will be studying in Leipzig, Germany this summer and traveling through Europe. 
 

Jim Lein is a geography teacher at Ohio University.  His wife Christine Gidycz is a staff member of the Psychology department at Ohio University.  He has two daughters, Adrianna and Elena.
 
 
 
 
 

Brian Winstanley is an Industrial Technology student with a minor in Business at Ohio University.  He is currently  seeking Internship options for the upcoming year as a Manufacturing Engineer in Boston or Phoenix. He started out as a Civil Engineer but decided to go into Industrial Technology because of the business aspect that the engineering degree holds. Tom Grabowski is studying Mechanical Engineering at Ohio University, he has been my (Brian) friend since freshman year. He has a very competitive nature which is an essential attribute for his major. He will be taking an internship in Buffalo, N.Y. this summer as a design engineer.

A Twenty First Century Manager:

Cindy:  My score on this assessment was an 8, which in reality might be a little higher then it should have been.  I an very good at working under pressure and stressful situations.  I have high stamina and adaptability levels.

Brian:  I started a 9 out of 10.  This was depending on how many strong answers I had, and I always want something to be either definitely right or wrong.

Jim:  Jim's score was a 5.  Here Jim can work on becoming less resistant to stress.  Overall,  Jim would prefer managing when he has a better feel for the outcome and more control of the current work environment. 

Tom:  Tom has a willingness to strengthen all his skills and that's probably why he also scored a 9 out of 10 strong answers.  He also has the attitude of wanting right or wrong answers.

Are You Cosmopolitan?:

Cindy:  My score of twenty places me in the "local" orientation group.  "Local" identifies with employing organization.

Brian:  I scored 28 points on this assessment which puts me in the "mixed" orientation.  I really feel that this a very proper score because I am not partial to my own profession as well as the organization I am working for.  You should be loyal to both.

Jim:  Jim scored 24 points which also placed him in a "mixed" orientation.  So Jim has a little bit of both cosmopolitan and local identities.  Cosmopolitan identifies with career profession. 

Tom:  Tom's score of a 27 was one away from mine. He was given a "mixed orientation between the career profession and and employing organization. 
 

Cultural Attitudes Inventory:

Cindy: My scores of 1.67 on the masculinity femininity were below the U.S. and Mexican average.  This implies that I am very comfortable with working with women in powerful positions and I believe that a women is as effective as a man.  Individualism-collectivism scores were above the U.S. average of 2.19 and the Mexican average of 3.33.  This suggests that I work for the benefit of the group rather then the individual success.  A 4.6 uncertainty-avoidance score suggests that I prefer to have my job spelled out for me before I do it.  I don't feel this is accurate since I like to have the freedom to be creative with my work.  My score of 1.6 on power distance is very close to average U.S. scores.  This is very accurate since I would prefer to communicate with my boss about any ideas or complications. 

Brian:  I scored very high in individualism-collectivism and uncertainty avoidance.  This does describe me for the most part because I look out for my group more than myself sometimes.  Also, I do not want any uncertainties in the workplace.  You should know what is going on with your workers on many levels, my power distance score was a 3.  I interpret this score by saying I want distance between subordinates but not too much where they don't like their managers or can't discuss problems they encounter within the company.

Jim:  Jim is very comfortable working in a work environment with women in powerful positions.  He had a score of 1.6 or could it be that his wife was peering over his shoulder?  Jim scored a 1.6 on individual-collectivism which suggests that her prefers to work for the good of the individual rather then the group.  A score of 3 for uncertainty avoidance would suggest that Jim can take risks more easily then the rest of the group.  His power distance score was 2.8 which is just above the U.S. and Mexican average meaning he would like some distance between the boss and subordinates.

Tom:  Tom's work orientation is  for the good of the group rather then the individual with a score of 4.4 in individual-collectivism.  He also likes less power distance within the business environment.  Overall, he has higher scores then average U.S. citizens. 
Tom's low score in power-distance relates to his high score in uncertanty-avoidance because he wants everyone within the organization to know what each other is doing, therefore eliminating unwelcome surprises.

Entrepreneurship Orientation:

Cindy:  My score of 81 on the entrepreneurship orientation would be very accurate.  I scored at the low end putting me just above a potential entrepreneur.  These results are accurate considering my career objective is to own my own small business.

Brian:  I received a 64 which places me in the potential entrepreneur category.  This suits me because I do not have much desire of owning my own company.  However, I do have ambitions of doing work activity in other ways.  I might have the ability to become an entrepreneur but I have my goals set elsewhere.

Jim:  Jim scored a 69 which places him in the potential entrepreneur category.  He has what it takes but prefers another career route.

Tom:  Tom score of 96 was the highest out of the four scores.  Tom desires to be a free-lance engineer after he builds some experience so this score is very accurate.

Intuitive Ability:

Cindy:  I feel that my score of a 9 on the intuition assessment fits me well.  I often follow my gut feelings over logic and always feel that I made the right decision afterwards.  I do this in everyday life and I think that I can apply it in the work place.

Brian: I received a 9 on the assessment and that suits me perfectly. I usually like to 
circumvent the solution of a problem with resources that I already know and for the most part I get the solution correct. However, I will ask for assistance when I need it or when I have had enough. I have a problem with asking for help but I know when I need it.

Jim: With Jim's profession, a geologist, there really is not a rule book on what to do or how to do it. What you need is experience in geology and the ability to reconcile situations that arise on just that experience alone. His score of an 8, I think is typical of most in that profession. They need intuition and other experiences to be successful.

Tom: Tom's intuitive ability resulted in a six on the assessment. With Tom's major you need a lot of problem solving ability but you also need instruction or hints on how to solve the problem. This score is correct for the most part because it shows that Tom has intuitive ability enough to solve big problems but also need instructions on what to do.

Least Preferred Coworker:

Cindy:  I am a relationship motivated person and my score of 99 on this assessment
reflects that accurately.  I have to be careful with my major not to get stuck behind a cubicle talking to my computer all.  I would much rather have interaction with people all day.

Brian:  My score was an 81, saying that I am a relationship motivated person.  I would rather know people that I work with in order to realize people's goals and work ethics.

Jim:  Jim scored a 77 which also puts him in the relationship motivated category.  This too is an accurate results considering that Jim is a teacher and has interaction with his students everyday. 

Tom:  Tom's score was a 42, revealing that he is a task-motivated person.  Tom really does communicate through his actions and feels that way is the best in order to run a business.

Personal Values :

Cindy:  My highest score here was a 200 in family values, followed by professional then intellectual.  These results show that I places my highest values in being successful in the home and in the work-place.  I think that my physical and spiritual scores could be improved and that not as much attention need to go to money.  I don't want to sacrifice my goals for a paycheck.

Brian:  My highest areas included family, social and spiritual values all at 200 points.  Professional, physical and intellectual all received scores of 190.  The accuracy of this assessment was almost dead on.  However, I feel there could have been more involved questions to reveal a persons real feelings on the particular areas.  All of these values should be important in a managers field, even morality, because there is an obvious underlying theme of morals in business transactions.

Jim:  Again the top three scores go to family, profession, and intellect. Physical activity follows.  There is a considerable gap between the top three and the other five values. These can be brought into greater balance if Jim focuses more energy on spiritual, community and financial.

Tom: Tom scored the highest in professional, physical, and family. It seems to me that the survey was very correct with Tom's assessment. He is very into his engineering studies and goes to Ping at least once a day. Although His highest value was a 180 I'm sure he values everything a little more than that. There is a significant gap between his highest and lowest scores, this is not healthy for a career oriented person and he maybe should show interest in other aspects of his life.

Personality Type:

Cindy:  My score of 22 fits the type B personality which is dead on.  I am definitely laid back and don't get to stressed out about things.  I am flexible with appointments and plans.  I don't get overworked if an unexpected twist of events comes about.

Brian:  My score of 40 labels me a Type A personality.  I do not dispute this assessment at all because I know that I am always hurrying around and I also like as much competition as I can get.

Jim:  Jim got a score of 30 which is a mix of Type A and Type B personalities.  Jim has a good balance of the too.  At times he is competitive while still finding the ability to just relax.

Tom:  Tom's score was exactly the same as Brian's with a score of 40.  I think Tom is a little more laid back then Brian but his competitiveness is definitely very high.  He is always playing sports or studying very hard for his science tests.

Stress Self-Test:

Cindy:  Again my personality is a Type B.  I am casual about time and take things one step at time.  I easily express my feelings but find that I feel rushed when there is a lot to get done.

Brian:  My score placed me in the Type A personality, which states that I have high stress.  I believe this assessment went hand in hand because I was placed in the Type A personality in the personality assessment above.

Jim:  Jim scored in the Type A personality which is a little different from the mixed A and B type in the personality assessment.  Jim is always on time and a bit on the competitive side and tries to do everything at once.

Tom:  Tom's placement of Type B in this assessment is not congruent with his personality score of Type A.  Tom is probably in the middle.  He is stressed about school, but what mechanical engineer isn't?  However, he is relaxed when he is not thinking about school or playing sports.

Time Management Profile:

Cindy: This test was accurate considering I just started on my Wall Street Journal assignment. I definitely need to balance my time more efficiently.

Brian:  The score was very accurate as far as I'm concerned ( in my dreams!). I always think I have good time management and I try to strengthen my skills in this area. However, I don't Think I deserve a 10 on this assessment, someone else who knows me should have taken this on me.

Jim: Jim scored a 5 on time management. There is still room for improvement but overall he has a good handle on balancing his time. He probably graded himself modestly in this assessment.

Tom:  Tom's scored a 5 also and by knowing him, he was modest in his grading also.  He has very good time management and that is present in his grades and his dedication to many things including his involvement with sports and community service on a regular basis.

Personal Thoughts:

I believe that many things were accomplished by doing this project. One is that I learned a lot about my managerial skills compared to others. We wanted to compare engineer's skills in a business oriented atmosphere to prove that we are not all anti-social bookworms. In Tom's case he likes to be in the background of things and capitalize from other people's misjudgment. In my case, I prefer to do my job with no outside influences, that's why I choose Engineering in the first place. However, I have learned that I can be more successful if I communicate engineering programs or other aspects to people that are outside the profession. This management class has brought that to my knowledge and I can only hope that my skills learned from this class can help me exceed others in my profession.

It was interesting to apply these assessments  our actual selves.  I also found it interesting to be able to compare my results to the results of other whom where all male.  I was a type B personality and the three others where all type A.  Jim's results where very useful since he has an established career where on the other hand the rest of the people surveying where students.  This management class has been very useful in teaching me how to make professional looking web pages.
