I began working for Ohio University and WOUB-TV back in 1978 after hearing of an opening while
traveling for the broadcast division of Harris Corp. I believe I was hired by
Don Smith DE because of my background with
WBNS-TV, WHOK and my experience selling broadcast equipment. Although I was not the first choice of the
applicants for the job opening, I was hired after the first choice declined. I really liked my job with Harris,
but was happy to get off the road traveling three states to become a family man again. Working for WOUB and Ohio University allowed me to work with students and training some of them to operate our TV broadcast equipment, and sometimes teaching a few students basic electronic therory. This experience at WOUB-TV is why many students attend Ohio University. Below are images of staff and some close friends during my years at WOUB-TV. I retired after working 25 years, then because I was able to buy my service time from my Navy years, and also receiving an empolyee buyout at age 62. I was then able to retire with a total of 31 years. In all those years, I was allowed to park in lot 22, and thought I'd add a picture of that parking lot, which I believe is now called lot 41. Many of the images below are of staff memories (some have passed away), and past equipment areas that were used when I first arrived back in 1978. I'm also including some images of the burned out businesses from a 1987 fire on Court St. which was located just below the RTV building. During the fire, I was told by Joe Welling to come in and stay on the roof to make sure ashes from the fire didn't damage the satellite dishes and cables and other areas of the roof. The burned out building included Carbenter Hardware, and the old location of Athens Flower shop. The block has been replaced with the Phoenix on Court building, CVS and the old Burger King business. As you view the small pictures below, slowly move your mouse over them to read the details about the image, then select the image to make it larger. The images shown here are areas within the TV Station, and some of the staff and students who worked with or around me during my 25 years with Ohio University and WOUB-TV.
