| Activity two . . . |
| Many designs are inspired by Piet Mondrian, especially those works which he painted in his "de stijl"years. The word "de stijl," is a Dutch word for "the style" in English. In a narrower sense, it refers to the peculiar style Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg anticipated in "the new art." Throughout the years since its first appearance, it has been used broadly by critics and artists to describe the style of Piet Mondrian. To understand this term in greater depth, one should trace the establishment of de stijl movement, as well as read the articles that Mondrian and van Doesburg contributed to the de stijl periodical initiated with this art movement. It is worth noting though, in his writing, Mondrian describes the style of his painting as "neo-plastic." Neo-plasticism has thus become an important term in Mondrian's aesthetics. |
