| Activity three . . . |
| Step 1:
Below is an applet that allows you to simulate Mondrian's paintings. This Mondrian applet is developed by Richie Bielak in June 1996. Click in the box to draw as many compositions as you may desire. |
| Step 2:
Do you notice the difference in each composition? Now, prepare a drawing pad and four color markers (red, yellow, blue and black) and click in the box again. Take note of those compositions that appeal to you. With the drawing tools you have just prepared, sketch out a few compositions that strongly appeal to you as you click and a few which you think are bad compositions. Step 3:

| Review:
Take a few minutes to recall the entire process of this activity. Do you notice that you have just gone through a process that Piet Mondrian has gone through about 80 years ago? Mondrian claimed that he worked with his intuition, which means that there isn't a rule which he followed when creating his composition. He allowed his intuition to speak to him while creating artworks during his "de stijl" years. To look at some paintings he created in his "de stijl" period, please go to Mondrian's virtual gallery. Mondrian himself described the paintings he created in this period as "neo-plastic." This is a term which you may want to research to know more about Piet Mondrian. Learn more about Neo-plasticism. |
