SEMINAR: ECOLOGY OF THE ANDES

Purpose: To give a comprehensive introduction to the "ecology" (in the broad sense) of the South American Andes. Faculty and students will present details of the geologic history, landforms and geography, climate, vegetation, characteristic flora, ecological and human-mediated processes maintaining or impacting on natural communities, evolutionary adaptations, economic botany and agriculture of the region. Emphasis will be placed on the central Andes, including southern Peru and Bolivia.

Format: One 2-hour block each week. Faculty will present during Weeks 1 and 2. Dual presentations by students will begin Week 3. Powerpoint presentations will be ca. 45 minutes. Each presentation will end with 10 minutes of discussion and 5 minutes for peer review.

Enrollment/Credits: Up to 10 undergraduate (PBIO 405) and 15 graduate (PBIO 693) students; 2 credit hours; all field course participants must take this course, and will be given priority for registration

Eligibility: Open to all undergrad natural sciences majors and PBIO/BIOS/MSES grad students

Evaluation of Student Progress: Peer critique of presentation; leading of or participation in discussion; attendance

Briefing Sessions for Field Trip Participants: Two required briefing sessions, one during Week 1 and another during Week 10, will cover essential preparation details for the field course and travel to Bolivia. Another required briefing session will highlight issues concerning the field research projects students will participate in during the field course. Four conversational language workshops, required for students lacking Spanish language training, will be provided for students wishing to gain rudiments of Spanish or to bolster their present skills.
