Dr. Berger's "...theory has been challenged by several scholars, most notably, Michael Sunnafrank, who claimed that relational development is a result of perceived outcome value." Take a look at Sunnafrank's attempt to reformulate Berger's Uncertainty Reduction Theory. You will see why Sunnafrank believes Berger's theory is flawed, and see the modifications Sunnafrank made to Berger's axioms.
William Gudykunst has added another dimension to Berger's theory. He claims that reducing uncertainty about other cultures helps to reduce the culture gap. Check out this site that looks at a recent publication by Gudykunst and Stella Ting-Toomy.
For an interesting option, check out a review of the comedy,Gung Ho, starring Michael Keaton. The film deals with an American businessman who is sent to Japan, and illustrates the differences between the cultures. I suggest watching the movie to have a visual understanding uncertainty reduction theory.
