Provided by the Department of State, the commercial country guides provide a wealth of information on foreign countries, including political, economic, and social issues.  Issued from the Office of Commercial and Business Affairs (CBA) plays a
major role in coordinating trade and investment matters to support  U.S. firms doing business overseas.  The guides are an important first step for any firm wishing to do business in a foreign country.

The CCG for Hungary (provided in pdf format) provides an outstanding evaluation of doing business in Hungary.  With an emphasis on the country's recent movement from a centralized to market economy, the guide offers insight into the hurdles and successes since 1990.  The section Marketing U.S. Products and Services offers a number of interesting points to encourage American business development within the country.  The U.S. represents the country's sixth largest trading partner after Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia and France. 


 
2. Esbensbade, Richard S. (1994) Cultures of The World: Hungary. New York:
            Marshall Cavendish Corporation. 

This book is a great source of information  on the geography, history, government, economy, lifestyle, religion, language, ats, leisure, festivals, food, and the Hungarian people themelves. 

Also included in this book is a map of Hungary complete with surrounding cities, elevation, information, and waterways. Included are very many colorful pictures of the different foods and culture of the Hungarians. 

Quick notes and a glossary are included in the back of the book for quick and easy

3. Toma,  Peter. (1977) Politics in Hungary.  W. H. Freeman and Company. 

This book addresses the situation of politics in Hungary.  Included is the development of the Hungarian People's Political System, the Conversion Functions, and Sysem Maintenance and Adaptation.

In 1949 the Hungarian communist Party came to power under the conditions created by the postwar social, economic, and political disarray and the Soviet military occupation.  Ther are many different views and interpretations of when and how the Communists party siezed power, and this book addresses them.

Another main concern in Hungarian Politics is political participation and the problem of legitmacy, which is also throughly addressed.


 
4.Bateman, Milford. (1997) Business Cultures in Central & Eastern Europe.
            Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann. 

A very useful book on the trasition towards the market economy amd the collapse of Communism and central planning. Not only is Hungarain business culture dicussed, but other countries like Czech Rrepublic, Poland, Croatia and Slovenia, Russia, and Kazakhstan are addressed as well. 

Along with business culture in Hungary, business is related to the: government, econmic reform, economy, finance, labour markets and trade unions, and edutcation and training.
All of these issues are discusseed in great detail and is a very good source of information.

Finally, a comparative analysis of Eastern European business cultures developed at the end of the book.


 
5. Dent, Bob. (1990) Blue Guide Hungary. New York: W W Norton. 

Written by a Hungarian, Bob Dent, this book is the ultimate guide to all you need to know about Hungary.  Each Hungarian city is available with very useful information from history and bus stations, to local post offices.

Each city also has a very detailed city map complete with significant places and street names too.  Important and very interesting points of interest are also highlighted in this outstanding book of Hungary.  Each place has a detailed description and history that is very easy to read and understand quickly as well. 

This is definatly something everyone should have when traveling  to Hungary 
because it is so quick and easy to use.Budapest, Church


 
6.  No Author. (2000) OECD Reviews of Foreign Direct Investment: Hungary.
            Andre-Pascal, France: OECD Publications. 

The great success of Hungary has lead to both the foreign and domestic investments which have greatly changed the economy to a market economy in the late 1980's. 

This informational book explains details of the types of investments that have made money with the changing economy. 


 
7. National culture and strategic change in belief formation.  (2000, Third Quarter). Journal of Interntional Business Studies,  p427-442. 
 
 

This artical studies the strategy related beliefs in five organizaitions in Hungary with foreign participation.  One of the strongest determinants of similarity of beliefs was being a member of the functional area favored by the particular strategic change. 

The effect of being in the favored area was greater than the effect of all other individual characteristics, including nationality.  Therfore, it is safe to say that being in a favored area can really help out towards porgress of strategic change.

This website has all the lastest up to date information on doing business in Hungary for both for foreign and domestic investors alike.  The lastest market analyis includes legal information from Cameron McKenna Ormai, and investing information from Arthur Anderson. Another important feature of this website is the accesability of the stock market and the latest information on dalily stock prices, weekly fixed income and forex, and a monthly market report.

Daily new can be found each and every morning in English by the Hungary Around the Clock.  Chose news from business daily, business weekly, comprehensive news or a Hungarian report.


 
9. The development and impact of marketing capabilties in Central Europe.  (2000, First Quarter). Journal of Interntional Business Studies,  p.63-81. 

The industial organization and evolutionary economic traditions in international business and the resource based view of the firm in stragtegic managment provide a rich and related perspectives on the question of performance in an international environment.  This article also talks about the marketing capabilities across a range of frim types in Hungary and surrounding countries.  Key strategic capabilities are examined including market orientation, the time of horzon of straegic decison making and positioning capability.


 
10. International Monitary Funds:

The IMF is an organization made up of 183 countries that work together to promote economical growth in not only their countries but throughtout the world as well.  The IMF promotes monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange with short term loans throughout the world.

Hungary's real GDP grew by 5.2 percent in 200, and exports were the main engine of growth. However, domestic growth remained moderate, reflecting slow real wage growth.

11. World Trade Organization

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business properly.  The WTO is comprised of 141 countries that work together on trade negociations and handle disputes dealing with trade beteween countries.

Hungary has undergone major macroeconomic and structural adjustment in its transition  to a market economy. Under extremely difficult economic and social circumstances, the Government has largely resisted protectionist pressures.

A very interesting website with the opportunity to search the site in either English or the Hungarian language.  This website contains the office of the prime minister and links to other important government ministers as well. 

Some important ministers in the Hungarian government are minister of interior, foreign affairs, finance, education, defense, economic affairs, transportation and water management, environment, health, social and family affairs, youth and sports, justice, and agriculture. 
Along with ministers many other important deparments and offices are part of the Hungarian Government: national and cultural heritage, office of Hungarian minorities abroad, national and ethhnic minorities, and the office of naional security.

Also there is great information on the Hungarian currency; the forint, both in note and coin form.  Along with pictures the different denominations of the forint in note form, coins are also represented. Current exchange rates are availible along with recomindations of places that offer the best conversion rates as well.


 
 
15. Kiraly, Bela. (1995) Lawful Revolution in Hungary, 1989-1994. New York:   Columbia University Press

This book talks about the Soft Dictatorship, Lawful Revolution, and the Socialists Return to Power and the potential for change in a one party state.  The new emergence of the Multiparty system in 1994 has been the great Socalist victory in the post-Communism country since 1990.

More detail is addressed about Multiparty systems and voter loyalty that goes along with any kind of political system.

Finally, economic and political stability is addressed in Hungary and the culture and crisis that go along with it.

A pretty good website of the CIA that allows you to search Hungary and find important facts and a map of Hungary with major cities and the surrounding countries too. Hungary joined the World Bank in 1982. During the mid-1980s, the Bank
assisted the Hungarian Government in removing price and trade distortions
